I ran across this listing this morning on Yahoo! Japan Auctions:

It appears to be a black Web Diver griffon 'bot...possibly a Lucky Draw of sort? Anyone know anything about this release? I Googled it, but nothing.

It is a lucky draw (Special Web Night campaign), 2001. Unfortunately I couldn't find the detail of it like the number of the winners, but there were also black Sharkon, black Garyun and white Waibarion. (No, I don't know how to spell those names  )

 

Interesting. I should have guessed, though. Takara loves their lucky draws.

 

Galleon (pirate ship/dragon) and Wyverion (fighter seaplane/wyvern) lol

Anyway I found more info. Special Web Night campaign was promoted by Takara and Colombia (?) Japan, apparently you had to sent in a coupon printed on a DVD cover.

100 winners per figure.

 

Yep, though I don't really think of them as lucky draws in the strict sense of the term, but contest prizes.

As I recall, there was also a giftpack special of Gradion and Wyverion with a matching color scheme.
