Grabbed the Mixmaster/Hoist set from TRU a couple days ago and just got around to opening him up... I was fiddling with Mixmaster and it dawned on me that there's absolutely nothing fun about this toy whatsoever. No satisfying clicks as pieces move into their proper position, no intuitive twisting and bending to line up parts, no thoughtful placement of kibble. It's just a pile of irritation and popped-off parts from start to finish. While I love thoughtfully-complex toys, I would hate this thing if I were a kid. So what would you consider to be the most UNFUN Transformer? Oh, and in before, "MOVIE TOYS, THEY ALL SUCK, DERRR..."
I've gotten the hang of Mixmaster quite well, and I personally love the heck out of almost everything about him, except for the solid cab shell on his butt, which could have used some breaking up. I'm not exactly sure who fits this bill in my books, as I'm a person who finds redeeming traits in just about any toy (and those that I can't get into at all, usually by aesthetic standpoint, I just don't buy at all). Perhaps the closest I can get in that regard is RotF Arcee. She looks great in both modes, IMO, but the transformation itself is unnecessarily confusing and unintuitive.
I'll be happy to take it off your hands then. As for me, ROTF Blazemaster. I had buyer's remorse from the moment I opened him. He looks cool on the packaging and all, but I see nothing redeeming about the actual toy.
Indeed. He is nice in helicopter mode, but robot mode is a fail. Transformation is not fun because of the way his "hands" need to be twisted in the right position. Its tricky to get them right without popping something off.
Armada Starscream. In the box it looked alright. Then I opened it. "Oh, the legs just fold down." I'm sorry. I know a lot of people listed it among their favorites in the "Favorite Starscream" thread, but the figure sucks. Sucks. The transformation is painfully simple, as I said- the legs just fold down. That's it. The wing/sword gimmick is weak. The sounds aren't that great. Not to mention you only get three sounds from two points despite the mini-con placement. This toy actually put me off for the rest of the Armada line. I don't think I bought another TF until Energon, save for maybe a couple of Mini-Con sets.
Universe Dropshot still maintains a lot of the zero-fun for me. I mean, he looks powerful, but I like a somewhat interesting transformation. He just unfolds and BAM, there he is. ROTF Jetfire would be a close second, just because I hate trying to get those damn panels to line up.
I think that the most unfun Transformer to TRANSFORM is Movie Jetfire. Getting him to turn into the SR-71 is a pain in the ass. But overall, I would probably say Supreme Devastator. No fun to transform, and almost ZERO posablity.
But..Mixmaster is the best toy in the RotF line D: Anyways, legends are pretty not fun IMO. Robot Heroes too.
I absolutely agree with your example. The frustration exceeds the fun. I can see it annoying kids. I've noticed some collectors seem to really love Mixmaster. Sure it's complex and reasonably accurate. But there's nothing clever about it and there's nothing fun about it. They put a lot of effort and brute force into it, but they didn't put a lot of thought into it. What I hate most about it is how incoherent and arbitrary everything is. A lot of little decisions went into this design, and I think most of them were made without any good reason. A ball joint here, a pin joint there, a bit of kibble hanging somewhere else. Why? Who knows. There's maybe 14 separate joints in each arm alone, all placed quite randomly. The other example I would give is ROTF Jetfire. That's similarly frustrating, but in a different way. It just feels half finished. Some pieces don't quite fit together. The whole thing is fiddly and awkward. And not fun at all.
movie line, there was only a couple figures that were worth having, longarm/hoist mold, dropkick, leader brawl, and landmine, the rest were just horrible imo, fell apart if you breathed on them funny, and wtf were they thinking with megatron?
