Let's say you got to be in the position of working on a Transformers cartoon, and you had the final say on what the plot was gonna be and what characters were going to be in it. It lasts for three seasons, advertises the toys, and ends.

Now I'm not asking what the plot of your cartoon would be, I'm just asking what characters would you choose to fill in the roles.

Let's assume you have a limit of 20 robots, for practical writing and budget reasons. 10 Autobots and 10 Decepticons. An initial 5-man band at the start for both teams plus another five "sixth rangers" who are introduced as the show goes on. Upgraded and renamed characters still count as one

    Here's mine:

    Autobots
    Main Team
    Optimus Prime- Deceased
    Ultra Magnus- Deceased
    Ratchet
    Hot Rod/ Rodimus Prime
    Arcee

    Others
    Wheeljack
    Elita One- Deceased
    Grimlock
    Sandstorm
    Star Saber

    Decepticons
    Main Team
    Megatron/ Galvatron- Deceased
    Starscream- Deceased
    Soundwave
    Cyclonus
    Rumble

    Others
    Shockwave- Deceased
    Nightbird- Deceased
    Lockdown- Deceased
    Sideways- Deceased
    Deathsaurus

Of course there would be plenty of human characters, and in the final season Primus and Unicron would have a role. Depending on the art style would determine how many generics there would be for minor roles, both human and robot.

I've already got a list of how & when I'd introduce every single G1 character, but limiting the cast to 20 is an an interesting experiment. Here's how I might do it:

    Season 1
    Ark Crew:

    Optimus Prime (offline/stasis)
    Prowl
    Ratchet
    Jazz
    Bumblebee
(There's not enough fuel to reactivate Prime, so Prowl is their de facto leader. Ratchet hates Prowl's guts. Jazz is the glue that holds the group together, and Bumblee is a little contrarian and a lot insecure)

    Nemesis Crew:
    Megatron
    Starscream
    Thundercracker
    Soundwave
(You can guess their dynamic. They have Seeker drones made of stolen F-15s)

    Season 2
    Cybertron Decepticons:

    Shockwave
    Ratbat
    Skywarp

    Cybertron Autobots:
    Blaster
    Springer

    Trapped Underneath Mount St. Hilary:
    Dinobots:
    Grimlock, Swoop, & Sludge
    Insecticons: Bombshell, Shrapnel, & Kickback
(They'd've been there since before the ark crashed)

    Season 3
    Galvatron II
    Powermaster Optimus Prime
    Goldbug
Classic Pretenders (as powerups, not silly disguises)

Ended up breaking the mold a little, but it's what makes sense to me.

I always thought characters like Skywarp, Windcharger, and Trailbreaker were way too overpowered to be a part of the initial cast, so in my head I've made them a part of the Cybertron Decepticon Empire/Autobot Resistance. Skywarp especially, since he would either be the basis for or the product of Spacebridge technology.

    Autobots
Optimus Prime - A young and untested leader, Optimus nevertheless shows a lot of potential in his role. He has a bit of a sarcastic streak, but can also be somewhat hot-headed. He transforms into a pickup truck.
Bulletproof - Second-in-command, wise old soldier type, turns into an armored SWAT truck
Flareup - The fembot, a feisty and inependent type, basically Yoko Littner as a Transformer, transforms into an ATV
Downbeat - The kid-appeal character, a music fan, kind of goofy, transforms into a tuner car
Smokescreen - A ninja, basically Snake Eyes as a Transformer, turns into a high-end sports car (first sixth ranger)
Jetstream - A screwball battlefield journalist, constantly breaks the fourth wall, looks like IDW Whirl, transforms into a news helicopter
Wheeljack - A crackpot scientist, eccentric yet intelligent, transforms into a beat-up muscle car

    Human sidekicks
Aaron Blackrock - A twenty-something automechanic, hot-headed but intelligent, easily angered by Downbeat's idiocy
Erika Yoke - A twenty-something tech expert, quiet-natured and shy, but stronger than she seems
Sophie Blackrock - Aaron's goofy younger sister, extremely happy to be friends with the Autobots, kind of a cloud cuckoolander
G.B. Blackrock - Sophie and Aaron's father, a sarcastic yet good-natured type of guy, an honest businessman in the alternative fuel industry, a staunch supporter of the Autobots.

    Decepticons
Megatron - The leader of the 'Cons, cruel and merciless, was heroic once like IDW Megs, out of commission at the start of the series like TFA and TFP Megs, transforms into a space jet like TLK Megs
Shockwave - Cold, logical, pretty much IDW Shockwave, commands the Decepticons before Megatron comes back, transforms into a twin-rotored gunship
Starscream - Hot-headed and reckless, decidedly NOT cowardly or backstabbing, has a strong sense of honor, basically TTGL's Viral in robot form, transforms into a fighter jet
Thundercracker - Starscream's older brother, a scientific mind who doesn't have much interest in fighting, actually not such a bad guy when you get down to it, transforms into a supersonic cargo jet
Skywarp - The middle of the seeker brothers, sneaky and sarcastic, much smarter than other Skywarps, kind of a slacker, is a ninja, transforms into a stealth jet
Bonecrusher - Big, dumb and angry, hates everything and everyone, acts and talks like a heel wrestler, transforms into a big-ass mining dump truck
Sonar - A perky female Decepticon, kind of a ditz, seemingly cute but actually completely psycho and murderous, transforms into a Transmetal dolphin
Flatline - A creepy bastard, the Decepticon's "medic," has a sadistic streak a mile wide, transforms into a hearse
Bludgeon - A legendary Decepticon warrior, an unstoppable killing machine, basically 2003 Clone Wars General Grievous if Mace Windue never crippled him, transforms into a tank
Whiteout - A Decepticon ninja, used to be an Autobot, is Smokescreen's evil brother, essentially Storm Shadow without any of his redeeming aspects, transforms into a sports car

    Others
XAL - An ancient alien supercomputer created by the race that created the Cybertronians, killed its creators, wants to kill all life forms in an insane quest for "peace" as it reasoned that it's in the nature of all life forms to fight, claims to be well-intentioned but is actually spiteful and cruel to the extent even Flatline seems like a saint (its quest for peace is a lie it tells itself; it's really just irredeemably evil and hates all life), was sealed away by ancient Cybertronians after the Cybertronians were turned from mindless machines into sentient beings by the creators in a last-ditch attempt to defeat XAL, has faded into Cybertronian myth as the "dark god" Xal, has a cult of Cybertronians who want to revive it, not knowing its true nature. It's basically the D-Reaper from Digimon Tamers, but it's willingly malicious and cruel.

Thunder Clash's Turbomasters were killed during the explosion and he was mortally wounded. Found underground by Decepticon deserters who had befriended Autobot deserters he was saved by an experimental procedure invented by Offroad and implemented by Alpha Bravo. The new combiner technology saved Thunder Clash's spark from leaking out of his body and enabled him and his new team to combine into the mighty Hyperdrive. Hiding from both sides, evacuating civilians caught in the crossfire, it was not long before they were found and invited by Twin Twist to join the underground Cybertronian utopia they had built for deserters and refugees. When the underground council decided to form the New Cybertronian Army and plot to claim back Cybertron from the Autobots and their tyrant Prime the Custoditrons were only to happy to join.)
(At the end of season 2 Morphine and Lynn Witwicky return to Cybertron, taking a lobotomised Fortress Maximus with them. When welcomed by Twin Twist and Topspin, Lynn uses Fort Max's canons to kill them. The plot was orchestrated by Thunderwing who is not content to just liberate his people from Autobot or Decepticons rule, but wants Cybertron to have a vast empire as in the days before the second great war. The idealistic Twin Twist and Topspin have served his goals well but now the tactically gifted Lynn Witwicky will be his new pawn.)

To be honest, most writers actually start with the plot first and then work out the characters later. It's kinda hard to say what my cast would be without also talking about the plot. I've come up with a lot of different cast lists which vary depending on what kind of plot line I have in mind.

I do like your idea of keeping the cast small. That's about where I like it. No matter what kind of plot I have in mind I try not to exceed the Beast Wars/Machine total. I'd rather go lower than to go higher. Though if I want combiners that usually complicates things. If I count them by individual robots than that limits how many combiner teams I can have but if I count them in combined forms then I exceed my limit.

Anyway, I'm sure to have some form of Optimus and Megatron in the cast... except for one idea I had where Cybertron is populated entirely by fembots. In that universe my idea was for Elita-One to lead the Autobots and Thunder blast to lead the Decepticons. Also in my Beast Wars idea was to have Onyx Primal vs. Cryotek but that's mostly due to Optimus Primal/Megatron, Leo Primal/Galvatron, and Neo Primal/Magmatron all having their battles at roughly the same time. Even though I kinda view them all as Optimus/Megatron analogs it would be kinda boring and confusing for four different characters all existing in the same time period to all have the same names.

Anyway... what about voice cast? Personally if I was doing the casting, I would only hire people who can play multiple roles. I would never hire anyone to do voice acting that only has one voice. I'm talking people like Scott McNeil. I want voice chameleons not easily recognizable voices because it's just the person's normal speaking voice. They are good actors but when they're easily recognizable they should be on screen or on stage not doing a job that requires you to stand in a small booth talking to yourself in as many distinct character voices as possible. Plus it still requires acting so just doing silly voices isn't the only part but it's voice acting, how can you be a voice actor if you can't talk to yourself and make it sound like two separate people.

Actors who only have one voice, their normal speaking voice, are boring for animation because they can only play one part at a time. That's just my opinion, go into stage or film but stay out of cartoons. For me one of the most fun parts about animation and the reason I still watch cartoons as an adult, is hearing people who can convincingly carry on entire conversations with themselves. I hate Lisa Simpson, not really the character but just the fact that she is the only character in the main cast who doesn't share her actor with anyone else in the series. Anyone else in the show is the voice for multiple characters. Though they're going to have to recast as one of them is leaving. But for a long time despite the huge cast of characters there was only really five actors with four of them playing multiple parts.

Also had this idea about how I would do combiners. Cast a different actor to play each of the individual robots but rather than casting a sixth for the combined mode or having the torso just do the voice, my idea is that the component parts would all speak I unison for combined mode. Like even their voices combine into one. Of course the audition process for that would be one set of individual auditions, then a call back where I try to get fell for how they all sound in the combined mode. I might really like someone for a limb or something but then hate them when I hear the voice along with the others. Though it's also possible that if I actually had a chance to try that I might end up hating it once I actually hear it. It seems like a good idea on paper but might be terrible in practice. Still I'd like to try it. Might be easier to record them separately in which case they could all be the same person, and then sync the voices in editing. But then again I might hate that too. I've never actually heard anything like it before so as much as I like the concept actually doing it might be totally different from how I imagined.

If I couldn't find a way to bring my combiner vision into a reality I'd probably scrap the idea. But I still want to cast as few people into as many roles as I can. I want people to have to read the credits to realize who the actors are. I don't want anyone watching and think oh that's the same guy from this other cartoon, I can tell because it's the same voice I hear in every cartoon he's ever been in. That's so boring to me. And if I'm making the show I want to have fun watching my actors talk to themselves every day. I don't want to work with Mr. One voice. He might be a nice guy and a great actor but it's so boring.

this is something constantly run through and i have dozens of ideas for shows and different casts, some g1 based, some movie based and some just random ones. so here is my most current random idea

So I decided to build a TF team with members encompassing a bunch of different groups of TF types, with the in universe reason being that the team could deal with or relate to any kind of situation.

Tigerhawk- brave, strong and noble team leader (very optimus primal personality). He covers two roles by being a beast bot and a flyer.

Botanica- medic and scientific officer, a technorganic plant-former

Drift- land vehicle mode warrior, master swordsman, former decepticon

    Seaspray- scout and aquatic specialist

Junkheap- gentle giant junkion, scavenger and extreme conditions survivalist

As for their enemies, my plan as of now would have their enemies lead by evil optimus clone Scourge, leading a crew of wayward or fugitive cons made up of soundwave(blaster), demolishor, slipstream, barricade and onslaught(TLK based).

    Autobots (Initial Group)
    • Ultra Magnus (Leader)
    • Hot Rod (Scout)
    • Cliffjumper (Warrior)
    • Jetfire (Warrior/Air Support)
    • Ratchet (Medic -of course-)
    Decepticons (Initial Group)
    • Megatron (Leader)
    • Starscream (2nd in Command)
    • Counterpunch (Spy)
    • Soundwave (Communications)
    • Shockwave (Scientist/Medic)
(They of course have Seeker drones)

    Autobots (Add Ons)
    • Optimus Prime (Takes over as leader in Season 2 when he arrives during a battle in which Magnus is slaughtered by Counterpunch)
    • Bumblebee (Becomes scouting partners with Hot Rod)
    • Perceptor (Sniper/Scientist)
    • Onyx Primal (A warrior discovered buried under millions of years of sediment having scouted the planet many, many years before the Autobots and Decepticons arrived.)
    • Alpha Trion (Adviser and is crushed by Unicron in the season 2 finale.)
    Decepticons (Add Ons)
    • Bludgeon (Usurps Starscream as 2nd in Command after that arrival of Optimus Prime, leaving the Seeker for dead floating in space only to be killed by Starscream in the finale of the series)
    • Sunstorm (Takes over Air Command after Starscream's supposed death)
    • Reptilion (Secretly working as an agent of Unicron, preparing for his return at the end of season 2. Is killed by Onyx Primal during the season 2 finale.)
    • Sixshot (Warrior)
    • Razorclaw (Warrior)
    Notes
    • Unicron would be the major enemy of season 2, with his first appearance being in episode 1 of the season
    • Counterpunch is a Decepticon to Autobot instead of Autobot to Decepticon. So Magnus is basically betrayed by someone he trusts who he never should've. Punch showed up on Earth with the Autobots, but it's made clear pretty quickly he was always a Con.
    • Any death is permanent and the character would never show up again unless in flashback.
    • Humans would show up occasionally, but not totally often. Like every few episodes maybe.
    • Optimus only shows up to Earth because the Matrix leads him there to face Unicron.

A cast I'd like to see in a new show:

    Elita One
    - Cynical, pragmatic, calculating, snobbish. Will do whatever she can to ascend the ranks of the Elite Guard.
Rattletrap - Flippant, sarcastic, sneaky, and rude. Kind of a slimeball, and Elita's partner in crime. Recently wounded and forced to act as the tech-guy, though he feels pretty useless when he isn't able to blast Cons anymore.
Red Alert - Cold, finicky, paranoid, and cautious. She manages pretty much everything. She doesn't let anyone in emotionally, and doesn't really know how to let herself relax. Major PTSD.
Jetfire - Cheerful, vain, old, and seemingly a little clueless. Jetfire claims to have been an adept Veteran Autobot warrior who worked with Optimus Prime himself. Though his body is falling apart, he still thinks himself an unstoppable force of will and power. His stories don't always seem to check out, either, which makes sense since he's actually a Decepticon hiding his identity from the others.
Hot Shot - Cyber-ninja. A huge risk-taker and adrenaline junkie. Despite his young age, he once led the famed Spy-Changers, and still displays such potential today. Unfortunately he's extremely reckless and gets his can kicked pretty much always. Flirts endlessly with Red Alert who genuinely hates him.
Springer - A triple-changer with a split personality. The dominant Springer is a cocky, headstrong braggart who butts heads now and then with the others, while the other Springer is meek, uncertain, and stewing in his life regrets. There's a third personality that neither Springer, nor Springer Too (get it? because he's Springer, and he's Springer, too!) like to talk about.
Airazor - Said to be a spawn of Unicron and the personification of Death itself. Truthfully Airazor is an aged, quiet, and cold-seeming warrior who focuses her attention entirely on the mission at hand, taking little consideration to those she works with. Red Alert would love her if she didn't scare the slag out of her. She's a little autistic in her actions, which the others kind of just learn to accept.

Gnashteeth - A Megatron fanboy nearly on par with Lugnut. Sophisticated, charming, and aloof. He has a plan to turn the earth into the ultimate Decepticon stronghold. Hates his name and wishes to change it to something with more bite, no pun intended.
Cyklotron - Lazy, crazy, stupid, and annoying. Cyklotron was the deformed younger brother of the Decepticon Heavy Brigade. He plays videogames, quotes memes, and says YOLO sometimes. Gnashteeth keeps him around partly because of his brother Blackout's reputation, but also because he and his partner Demolishor are effective and loyal grunts, excellent in locating and gathering energon, despite their lack of intelligence.
Demolishor - Extremely loyal, loudmouthed, and slow to a fault. As Second in Command, Demolishor barks orders to everyone else, taking a great pride in his position of authority, and general friendship with Gnashteeth. Unfortunately Gnashteeth rarely acknowledges his efforts, which leaves him sometimes depressed. He is probably actually the kindest member of the group, and has considered ignoring the Autobots entirely in favor of working towards Gnashteeth's grand plan.
Tarantulas - Irritable, intelligent, and a little loopy in the head. Tarantulas is Gnashteeth's chief science officer (and only science officer), and is usually found working in his lair, seperated from the typical Decepticon base. He has plans that may very well supersede Gnashteeth's own. He has recently turned himself into a Techno Organic, believing it to be the form Cybertronians are destined to one-day take.
Soundwave - Has taken a vow of silence as part of some ancient Cyber Ninja ritual linked to processor over matter. Probably the most talented fighter of the team. The seemingly emotionless Soundwave has begun dabbling in music, finding clips from songs as a perfect substitute for his self-deactivated voice-box. He finds music an equally useful tool in tactics of intimidation and psychological warfare as well. What emotion he does possess seems to come in small doses, like giving one of his partners a thumbs up, or slumping somewhat upon learning Cyklotron lost his keys again. Recently he's been growing to actually enjoy the music he listens to and has considered making his own. Which is a first.
Airachnid - A suave and sophisticated bot, who's collection of rare organics has earned her a plethora of wealth. She intimidates and interrogates others into making deals with her, but truthfully, on the inside, she's a bit of a geek. She collects rare species because she is genuinely fascinated by them, and admire's their physiologies as well. Though she tries to hide it behind her intimidating nature, it does not always work.
Strika - Once leader of the fierce General, Strika at first intended to take over Gnashteeth's motely crew, but after attempting to take out the Autobots on her own, she sustained incredible damage, nearly falling offline in the process. After having her life saved by Gnashteeth, Strika has decided to serve him as thanks. Still, Soundwave watches her for clues of treachery.

    ALTERNATIVE THAT ONLY I WANT

A bunch of self-contained episodes featuring
Optimus Prime - A pretentious, pontificating leader who sucks at his job
Ironhide - An old, possibly insane gun-nut with a hate-on for Decepticons so strong he could implode a sun.
Blackarachnia - Young former Decepticon tagging along for the "keks" as she puts it. Hates Ironhide and his crusty ways.

Doesn't even need any Decepticons. Just these three goofing around in space and getting into weird trouble. The cons would be mentioned whenever Optimus spouts about how they must be stopped, and how they're like totally the only three who can accomplish it. But maybe there's only like, four Decepticons left, and they all suck just as bad.

I've been brainstorming ideas for a while, and as said, it's kinda hard to come up with characters when you don't have a plot. So I eventually came up with one that should hopefully subvert the usual status quo and make for interesting conflict.

Here, the Autobot and Decepticon War has only just begun. Like it was literally declared the other day before the show began. And it happened so suddenly, that most Autobots and Decepticons aren't that willing to fight each other. In fact, before this, Autobots and Decepticons were just political parties that never even dreamed of fighting each other. But now a radical upstart, Megatron, has rallied a following of loyal Decepticons who do seek to take over and see the system in place in Cybertron's government as corrupt (in actuality I mean it's not perfect but it's not corrupt either). That's not to say Cybertron is completely unprepared for combat or anything; they've had wars before with other hostile races.

Megatron's crew was actually defeated by the government and banished to Earth. However, Megs sees this as an opportunity to slowly build up an empire based out of Earth, and summons all willing to join his army on Earth. Kinda like the First Order in TFA retreating to the Unknown Regions. To counter this and stop it from growing, Optimus and a crew are deployed to Earth to contain Megatron's crew and make sure they never poise a threat and return to Cybertron. Optimus doesn't really want to do this, but finds she's a rather natural fit for leadership as the conflict eventually grows more and more serious and Cybertron begins to fall into more disarray.

That wasn't a typo either. I know this would get a shitload of hate, but I want a female Optimus Prime to lead this series; furthermore, the actress playing her would be able to take the heat perhaps better than anyone. I'm a big fan of her as she seems to be a talented rising star who uses her voice for so much good in today's day and age - I would cast Zendaya as Optimus Prime.

That's not to say Peter Cullen would go unused. Peter would voice Optimus' mentor Prima, who in this continuity is the normal, mortal, elected sovereign leader of Cybertron and may or not be one of the Thirteen.

As for the rest of the cast, I'd like to go with a mix of old and new, leaning more towards new to give the spotlight to newer additions to the mythos. Ratchet is the second in command and medic, having his movie colors and is Optimus' best friend (haven't given him much thought but he wouldn't be the cool old guy from the movies at least). Drift joined the Autobots out of disgust at Megs' extremism, but still sympathizes the most with the Decepticons and usually advocates the hardest for peace. Tricerashot is the big guy of the team, going from Triceratops to big bulky gladiator type warrior, suffering from PTSD from the pits but conflicted because of his nostalgia for those days. Nautica is Optimus' fellow bibliophile, and is the young, impetuous kid appeal character. I'd like another character in there but I can't think of one at the moment.

For the Decepticons, Megatron is a super studious bookworm who has studied the Cybertronian political system for years to learn its ins and outs. He's very well spoken and eloquent, his silver tongue being one of his best assets. He doesn't really want to conquer anyone, but he feels the system is too slow for real change and wants to forcibly take control to quickly enact it, proving he's not as perfect as he thinks he is since that flies in the face of all he's learned about said system. Really vague "we're gonna talk them into shutting down" kind of guy, but he still can sway people to his side easily. He does care about his loyalists, even though he knows he must learn to be ruthless as he's leading a militant movement.

Also in his cabal is Nitro Zeus, his loud, obnoxious second in command who really just wants to have a fun time on this whole movement thing and is pretty well liked by both sides for it. Slipstream is in, though she has her own plans for a Decepticon ruled Cybertron. Balewing is the bruiser of the team, and she has a Dark Knight Saga Tumbler alt mode (get it? Balewing?). Barricade is the Decepticons' communication officer, giving them an edge as being a cop car means he can access human radio and Internet. Remember how CYLAS in Prime could've given Megs the edge with his organization and human contact and all? This is that idea realized. Rounding out the crew is Flatline, the Decepticon medic who's delightfully kooky and straight out of old horror B-movies.

I haven't worked out a full cast yet, but here's what I got so far:

    Optimus Prime - Zendaya
    Drift - Ryan Potter
    Tricerashot - Phil LaMarr
    Nautica - Anika Noni Rose
    Nitro Zeus - John DiMaggio
    Slipstream - Zelda Williams
Barricade - Keith David if I could get him, but Jess Harrell is next choice
    Flatline - Dee Bradley Baker

As this show will never happen, I'll include a shopping list of cameos, guest actors, and others I'd love to have on the show: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kate McKinnon, Tom Kane, Lance Henriksen as Lockdown, Garry Chalk, Chris Pratt, Steven Yeun, Donald Glover, James Earl Jones, and hell I'd have Shia in it too somewhere.
