Hi let's discuss this little niche of the music genre, soundtrack music! I'm no expert but what are some of your favorite themes or leitmotifs of all time and of the last decade? (Forgive me if my terminology or titles are wrong and I'm not sure if this thread goes here or in general discussion)

    For me, my absolute favorite:
    1) The Force Theme - Star Wars (heck Star Wars would fill the whole list if I went wild)
    2) Concerning Hobbits and The Fellowship Theme - Lord of the Rings
    3) Hedwig's Theme - Harry Potter

    Others:
    1) He's a Pirate - Pirates of the Caribbean
    2) The Battle/Only the Beginning of an Adventure - The Chronicles of Narnia
    3) Arrival to Earth - Transformers
    4) Avatar Main theme/I See You - Avatar
    5) Test Drive/Main Theme - How To Train Your Dragon
    6) Rose/My Heart Will Go On - Titanic
    7) Batman Main Theme - Batman (1989)
    8) Dragonheart Theme - Dragonheart
    9) Star Trek Main Theme - Star Trek - The Motion Picture
    10) Enterprising Young Men/Main Theme - Star Trek (2009)

These are from the top of my head.

Definitely the Star Trek theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the Theme from Star Wars are among my favorite movie themes.

That, and the LION's version of the Transformers theme from the 1986 movie.

The Last Starfighter and Commando. Try driving the speed limit with either of those playing in your car. I dare you.

I forgot to add that John Williams' Superman was quite a masterpiece as well, in my opinion.

^I remember a few summers ago, it was the Friday after a rough week at work and I was driving home with my iPod (hooked up to the car stereo) set on shuffle. Then Williams' Superman theme came on: windows down and I cranked that mofo! Now THAT'S how you start the weekend.

Re: Star Wars, on top of the main theme(s), there are so many other lengendary ones to choose from:
    -Imperial March
    -Princess Leia's theme
Even if I'm not a fan of the new trilogy I'd add:
    -Duel of the Fates
    -Across the Stars

Batman Returns has one of the best soundtracks you'll come across.

A real cliché one is Amelie. That stuff gets played all the time, but it's pretty good.

One of my all time faves is Jerry Goldsmith's work on Escape from the Planet of the Apes. Mediocre sequel. Awesome music.

    Ebay:
The whole score to The Crow.
The whole score to Batman (1989)
The whole score to Conan the Barbarian.

i can't just restrict myself to a single track to an OST.
i listen to my OSTs to stimulate my imagination and writing. For example, the 89 Batman score is great because you can listen to it straight through and feel a narrative. or, you shuffle the tracks and each is its own unique story.

a lot of OSTs i have listened to in the past 5-10 years can't do that. it's all disjointed and the idea of a motif is barely touched upon.

Almost anything composed by John Williams.

Also, He's a Pirate - Pirates of the Caribbean
Concerning Hobbits and The Fellowship Theme - Lord of the Rings
Batman Main Theme - Batman (1989)
Enterprising Young Men/Main Theme - Star Trek (2009)
Arrival on Earth - Transformers (2007)
    Techno Syndrome - Mortal Kombat
    Back to the Future theme

Man, that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many movie scores and OSTs that I just plain love.

Arrival to Earth - Steve Jablonsky: Transformers (2007)
Superman Theme - John Williams: Superman (1978)
Jake's First Flight - James Horner: Avatar (2009)
Test Flight - John Powell: How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
James Bond Theme - Monty Norman Orchestra: Dr. No (1962)
Now We Are Free - Lisa Gerrard and Hans Zimmer: Gladiator (2000)

    Those are my favourites anyway.

Ah yes, Jake's First Flight was also very good, and who can forget the Bond theme!
