Since Frank Welker was playing Shockwave in the movie, I kept thinking what Shockwave sounded like in movie. Tried to compare other Frank Welker cartoon characters.

Until I stubbled on to a clip of the beginning with Shockwave saying "Optimus". That made me think is that Frank Welker's Megatron voice. Think about it, Shockwave when he said that one line, he sounded a little deep and wheezy like Megatron's voice, with just a few beastly roars and growls.

And since Frank Welker didn't get the part for Megatron, I guess you can't let a good Megatron voice go to waste.

It was a terrible Shockwave voice, but then again, that was a terrible Shockwave.

Whenever I hear that one Shockwave line of "Optimus", it makes me think of the TFPrime Megatrons voice, not his G1 version.

Sounds more like Prime Megatron than G1 to me. I like it well enough, but would have liked it better if he spoke more!

Welker's done a ton of voices that sound different from each other...the fact that it's the same guy doing the voice doesn't automatically mean they're going to sound the same. Especially with all the various effects they could add in after the recording session.

We all thought Shockwave was going to have a MUCH bigger role, or at least three times as many lines, before anybody saw the movie.

Now that we know Shockwave did next to nothing, Corey Burton would have been wasted in this role.

Frank Welker's G1 Megatron voice suffered with age, I think that was part of the reason he didn't get the part (although Hugo Weaving's Movie Megatron is excellent in my opinion, a nice change of pace). With Prime Megatron's voice, it's hard to pinpoint but there's something big that was changed so that it sounds similar, but there's a slight but noticeable difference. I honestly like Prime Megatron's voice better, since it doesn't sound as raspy as the original (even though Welker is ironically older and logic would say age would mean a raspier voice), and movie Shockwave only got one actually understandable line that kind of sounds the same in either Megatron voice, so it's hard to tell.

It's not Shockwave unless he has a strained old man voice! /sarcasm

But no, he didn't sound like G1 Megatron to me.

...He had one word in the whole movie. One word!

How much analysis of his voice can you do?
