With the background material, yes, but the actual reproduction of the UK comics in these "Classics" volumes is pretty poor.

Yeah I nearly put that in my post. The paper/print clarity/size of them is not very good, but the sheer amount of bonus material makes up for it. Hachette on the other hand, as I've said in that thread, is really good presentation - nice look and feel to the books and pages etc - but unfortunately somebody set the software on overkill and we get over-heavy artwork and text blunders that nobody seems bothered enough to check for. It's like there's a competition to see who can cock up in the most original way...

That's exactly how I feel (except I don't have access to the Hachette releases).

I'm not elated on IDW's format, but it's the only choice out there, and it's all-inclusive. I'll keep the Titan collections for the size/resolution.

Sad or amusing how correct your last statement is...

What do you mean by "over-heavy artwork"?

It's something the US IDW strips suffer from. Doubtless it's due to whatever software they used to remove the original 'dotty' 1980's colour from the pages before adding in their new smooth colours, which would be why UK material is unaffected. It seems like the software aggressively eats into the linework and around the edges of the text, destroying the finer details. To counter this they appear to have bulked things out again with heavy black, which gives everything a rough, blotchy look. Some are saying that software is also being used to 'correct' the text, but if it is there's certainly no kind of spellchecker or proofreading going on. Below is a comparison of a panel from Power Play, showing a scan of my old Titan reprint (top) vs Hachette (below) from their latest volume. Note how fine detail like seeker engine exhausts has gone completely, not to mention 'Skyward' and 'Laseragak' in the text!

What's interesting is that the early UK comic used to print some of its US reprint pages in black & white, and those specific pages seem to have escaped the butchering in IDW's versions, making me think IDW must have used the UK B&W pages when recolouring. If only there had been clean B&W pages of all the US stuff available this kind of thing might have been avoided!

Ok, for those that have the Hachette books, how is the reproduction of the US material? Cause it's really looking like I should start trying to import the Marvel volumes.

Dude, there's a full-on comparison I posted right above you! :lol

If it's US material you're interested in, stay away from the Hachette volumes. The Marvel US content, as seen above, is for the most part pretty dire. OTOH their Marvel UK reprints are actually very good (those haven't been interfered with). I have the Titan US TPBs and they will remain my go-to volumes, they are basically the original Marvel comics in TPB form, warts and all. I don't own the IDW US recolour collections, but I'm led to believe they are the same as what Hachette are currently using.

Correct, Hachette are using the IDW masters - so the quality is the same as per IDW's "Transformers Classics" series.
