This just started happening to me after owning the thing for a little over a year. Anyone else have this issue? I tried to search for a thread on this and couldn't find anything.

Your video card is going. It happened to me. It's not covered under the warranty. Cost me $150 to get it fixed from MS. Just about a week after mine started showing strange colors, the whole card went.

I wonder if he can lie and say it's RROD?

Nope. Because once they plug it in, and see it's not ringed, they'll ship it back and charge you for the trouble. Also, fixing what causes the RRoD isn't going to fix the video card issue, which needed to be completely replaced.

Well, that's not true at all. They don't fix anything, they replace the units. Typically with refurbs. And this error has been related to the e74 error and that is covered.

I had a similar problem. Eventually it just went to a black screen and wouldn't show any images. I went and set up an an online repair and it was serviced, free of charge and took about 8 days.

Granted, I did try to RRoD it first but I had no such luck.

You may have gotten lucky, but that's likely going to be the exception and not the rule. If it's not red ringed, and it's outside the 1 year warranty period, they won't cover the charges. I spent days arguing with them over this. They made it clear to me, if it's not red ringed, I eat the cost. Hence why I was forced to pay $150 to fix my 360. And my unit was not replaced, it was repaired. Got the same thing back that I sent out, scuff marks and all.

That's a question better answered by asking Target.

Well, I guess I'll make some calls tonight after work. Thanks for the input! Target said they will try to repair it, should I go through the Target deal or just go straight to Microsoft?

You should find out from MS if Targets "repairs" will have any negative impact should you need MS to actually do anything.

You can try the warranty service or you can wait for it to pop up with an error or the RRoD.

Most warranty services are an outside company from where you purchased it. Most of them tend to just replace the product with an equivelent or gift card.

E74 errors are generally related to video problems. The E74 warranty was recently expanded to 3 years as well. You can wait and see if you ever get that error code but going through your warranty service is probably going to be the quickest and easiest.

Well, I'm more inclined to believe that you're the exception and not the rule since in the same thread as me someone had the same problem and it was fixed. The E74 Error is covered by the 3 year warranty extension and these video problems are in direct relation to it.

If anything I'd recommend setting up an online service, shipping it off and letting them see if it's covered. Worst case scenario it's sent back not repaired with no charge.

if the video card goes out, I would give it the RROD by running it without any ventilation, cover it in towels, whatever. send it in to get repaired for the RROD. if they replace it, you're good. if they just fix the RROD issue and send it back, ask them why they saw fit to break the video card while they were at it.

For anyone who has sent theirs in, did you keep you HD or have to send that back as well. I don't want to lose all my information.

That didn't work for me. My XBox would not Red Ring. It was left in a towel for hours, and evnetually just powered off.

Sorry to argue but that's not true, I've made special marks on my nephew's console the first time it red ringed and it came back as the same exact console with the same exact marks so they didn't switch his until it red ringed a 2nd time.

They pull the case off and slap refurbished innards into the existing case.

Then it must be a more recent thing. Mine happened about a year and a half ago and video card failures were not covered then.
