Earlier today I was playing Xbox live and could hear my team-mates and other people just fine. How ever, I can no longer hear people.

actually sounds like a network issue, maybe you have a strict NAT as opposed to an open one.

I've been experiencing this a lot lately. If you've been playing Halo 3, I think that's the problem as it's the only game I've experienced that on. For some reason, when you get more than 3 or 4 people on a board, the sound gets janky. You may hear one person but not the others or nobody at all, and they can't hear you either. I've tried pushing up on the D-pad, but that doesn't work either.

It was indeed halo3 and I've made sure my Nat is set to open *after much looking* and still having a hard time hearing people that are -supposedly- talking.

This morning.. No I'm not sure.

Last night, yes I am sure as we'd all be talking just seconds before and everything just cut out.

Same thing happened to me. People's voices would be garbled, or not working at all. Of course, things are bound to be slow, as Halo 3 is raping the internet. With so many people online, I can't imagine it NOT slowing down.
