if i buy just the basic unit. will it play hd-dvds
No, you need the add-on drive.
and don't buy the basic unit, make sure you get one of the models with the included hard drive. you'll need something to save games on anyway, so you're better off having one you can actually download content to.
Exactly. If you buy the core unit you still have to buy something to save your games to. If you buy the HDD separately you just spent the same as buying the Premium. If you buy the memory unit that is $50 so you have really only saved $50 and you will have a wired controller.
With the recent price drops, just go ahead and shell out the extra cash and buy the Elite version.
Now I'm wondering if they'll release a black HD DVD unit or will I just have to settle for having a color clashing add-on?!
thanks. now i just need to save up
If you are going to buy the Premium and not the Elite, the Premiums with HDMI support should be arriving in the stores in a few weeks.
i could start a flame war by mentioning that the elite should have the drive built in but, oh wait...
I'm not sure that would start a flame war.
It should have the HD-DVD drive.
the word 'elite' does sort of imply a superior sort of product.
Or one could ask which format will win the next-gen DVD war?! I really don't care myself - that said I'm still holding out for a black HD DVD add-on drive.
i got the hard drive add on. its great but it does clash with my elite. however i must warn you guys 300 looked horrible on my hd player. the backgrounds had loads of noise on the image it was horrible. hulk on the other hand looked stunning.
Did you buy the hard drive or the HD-DVD player?
Are you referring to downloading 300 on the Marketplace?
I have not seen that, but I have seen 300 on HD-DVD and Blu-ray and I can tell you that the video and audio on both was flawless.
It doesn't matter if you have Blu-ray or HD-DVD, 300 is the movie to showcase your system.
sorry meant hd dvd drive. and the quality was bad. The items in the foreground were very nice but the background looked grainy.
That is not poor quality, that is how the film was made. It was like that in the theatre.
In case it wasn't clear from the responses you got, it doesn't matter which version you get, you will still have to buy the HD-DVD drive separately. That said, there is no way in hell you should get the core version.
