X-Men: First Class Gets a Date... and a Director!

X-Men: First Class Gets a Date... and a Director!

Matthew Vaughn helms the movie for June 3, 2011

It's been touch and go for the last week, but Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn has been confirmed to helm X-Men: First Class, 20th Century Fox's prequel to the lucrative franchise based on the Marvel Comics super-team. Not only have they signed Vaughn, directing his third movie in a row based on comic material, but Fox is confident enough in his abilities to set a release date for June 3, 2011, a little less than 13 months from today.

Basing the movie around a concept by Bryan Singer, director of the first two movies who had already committed to direct Jack the Giant Killer, Fox hired the writing team behind Marvel Studios' Thor, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, to do a few rewrites on the script with plans to start making the movie this summer. Singer will co-produce along with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. So far, no cast has been announced including whether Patrick Stewart will return as Professor Charles Xavier or whether Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine.

The new release date puts the movie in competition against DreamWorks Animation's sequel Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom and opening two weeks before Warner Bros.' Green Lantern.

20th Century Fox has provided ComingSoon.net/SuperHeroHype with this description of the movie:

"X-Men: First Class, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men."

It likely won't be Wolverine-centric (if he's in it, it'll likely be a cameo appearance given the time it's supposed to take place in), so I'm definitely in!

So...they're releasing it 2 weeks before Green Lantern, which is currently being filmed, and they don't even have an announced cast yet?

Oh yes, this will surely be made with care.

Sorry, but X3 was disappointing, and the Wolverine movie was lamentably poor.

Fool me once and all. I will not contribute to the opening. I will wait for reviews because they have taught me to.

I have absolutely zero expectations for this one after the last two horrible films.

I'm sure they'll still find a way to make it all about Wolverine.

Kick-Ass is a nice (non) superhero movie, so I am very pumped about having Vaugh directing the next X-Men movie. Hopefully it'll be more action packed and exciting than the last 3. I am very confident that they will put out a good movie given how awful #3 is.

Meh, this franchise needs a reboot of some kind. They should just hire Joss Whedon to film his four Astonishing X-Men arcs as four movies.

I actually loved the Wolverine movie and didn't get all the hate for it...until Deadpool showed up...and then the whole thing fell apart and now I loathe it. But, I agree that there needs to be a reboot of some kind. Ice Man and Angel are already established as coming into the picture later on when they are supposed to be among the first X-Men. I'll reserve judgment until I see it, but, I'm uneasy with the direction they're continuing in.

I'm going to have to see the T-Meter on this one. 'Specially after the last two.

    X-Men 3 - Just below "meh"

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - HOLY JESUS THAT MOVIE SUCKED.

I agree with MACRAPTRON on Fantastic Four. First was was stupid and the second was stupid, but not as stupid.

The second one was worse for the hatchet job they did on Sue Storm. She went from being a somewhat intelligence woman in the first movie to the worst possible "All I want to do is get married" woman cliche.
