What if Transformers had come out in the '40s instead of the '80s?

    What might have been ...

And here are two alternate versions (filtered to look older, like they've been printed):

I can tell you one thing - a Volkswagen beetle would NOT be saluting the US flag.

Then again, it might if the comic were being used as crippling propaganda.

Weren't they ALL propaganda in that time? LOL

And he is not a Beetle, as there was no such thing yet. G-1 Bumblebee is a 1959 model (the only Classic car Transformer, to my knowledge), and this is a mid-1940s comic.

Whatever his alt. mode is, it would be some sort of small, American sedan. I doubt I'll ever draw an alt. mode, though. If I do anymore, I'll do Nazi Megatron.

I think the Beetle appeared on the American market in the late 50's, but it was designed by Ferdinand Porsche in the 30's to fulfill Der Fuhrer's desire for a cheap, efficient "People's Car." So maybe Bumblebee should be renamed Buckethead.

*A yellow Cooper would be a nice alt for BB, though

Yea, I have to agree a few folks here. that a VW beetle wouldn't make a great Autobot in 1940's America. But regardless, it's still an awsome picture!

I like the third one, looks the most like all the old beaten up comic covers I've seen. Bumblebee doesn't have to be a VW in this one, he can be an outer space car that looks vaguely like a VW Beetle (maybe make the front of the car a solid piece, the hood and headlights of the VW beetle are a dead giveaway)

    Folks:

You know, Bumblebee's espionage duties would provide a great reason for that altmode in that context. A Kubelwagen would probably be better yet.

The VW Käfer or correctly KdF-Wagen (Kraft durch Freude) was first rolling in 1935 (Type 30 test car). In 1938 when the VW factory opened the plan was to mass produced the car, but due to the outbreak of war only about 700 got made.
In 1949 the first export model came and by. In 1955 Käfer nr.1mio was built.

Thanks guys. I've already done one with Circuit Breaker, and I've been getting a lot of requests for Megatron, so he is def. coming next.

I agree that the third one is the best one, as it looks older and faded. This real 1940s comic was my inspiration:

Optimus's design was based on the original Jack Kirby Iron Man in the 60s, and Bumblebee was put there as a homage to Captain America and Bucky (as well as Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot). Kid sidekicks were big in that era (Bucky, Robin, Speedy, ect).

As for the girl saying "they're terriffic", that was not really intentional. I had already drawn the kids (originally they were supposed to be telling about the decoder ring). But in the editing phase, the free offer seemed more logical at the top of the page, near the title than at the bottom (I tried to make it as though it were really for sale). I had to add some dialogue for the kids, and I remembered the tagline for Citizen Kane was "It's Terriffic!" so I tossed that in.

Besides, if I moved the balloon to make the boy say it, than the word ballon would be over Optimus's crotch and that would look weird.

They had oil and gas in the 40s. What you think their cars ran on? Plus, the gas was 11 cent a gallon -- so cheap Megatron wouldn't even need to steal it.

Oh, and good point about the small American sedans. I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that. I guess I was drinking too much energon or something.

will you be making any actual pages, or will it all be covers? I'd love to see a tongue in cheek '40s TF comic

I dunno about not making BB a beetle or the late 30s version... there's a lot of good reasons for doing so. Speaking from experience here.

Nice to see someone doing WW2-era TF pics, though ^^
