My wife and I have started finding these weird objects in our yard this past week and we have no idea what they are. Wednesday this week my wife found the first one laying broken on our mulch pile. She said that there was a beetle of some kind crawling around in it. She bagged it and threw it away, assuming it was just garbage that one of our local neighborhood brats or drunks deposited over into our yard. Today when we woke up there was another one of these things in nearly the same spot in our yard except this time it was very clearly growing up out of the ground. It looks like a crab leg or an upside down carrot in shape and color but it's sort of rubbery in texture. It also appears to have a tiny hole at the very tip. I could see no sign of insects on or near it. The creepy part is that it grew above ground to its current size in just 12 to 24 hours is I would estimate 3 to 4 inches tall above ground. It's hard to say in the dark but just in the past 8 hours it appears another one is also forming near the first. We've never seen anything like these things and the speed at which they are appearing is creeping us both out. Anyone know what they are?
A carrot? Your description is making it hard to figure out what you're talking about. I'm no expert on plants. To me, they just look like carrots.
My friend the walking encyclopedia has found an answer... Cordyceps Militaris Apparently its a mushroom that sounds just a little bit like the aliens "The Flood" from Halo. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go set fire to my backyard.
