Are they kinda like the equivalent of the special forces(Green Berets, Navy Seals, Delta Force) for the Autobots?
Sort of. They're elite warriors, definitely. Mostly depends on the continuity. In G1, they were elite warriors that went on suicide/high risk missions. In DotM, they're just...kinda jerks, but still really good warriors. In IDW, they're not elite warriors, they're just a suicide squad.
I think of the Wreckers as being like the elite military/special forces, and the Elite Guard (in continuities where there are both) as being more like the National Guard or a powerful police force.
There's more continuities to G1 than the cartoon. They came in the G1 comics, and are pretty much comics exclusive, besides the movie trio.
Not exactly, they were proeminently featured in TFP too [Bulkhead was a former wrecker and Wheeljack is one damn good Wrecker], showing the same nature they always showed [One-Man Army of badasses]. And we could, just for fun, link them to the Special Operations Executive, also known as "Bakerstreet Iregulars", a WWII borderline-Black Ops team of elite soldiers who worked for President Churchill himself and deployed Guerrila Warfare against The Axis, supposedly, the team's orders [as said by Churchill] were to "set Europe ablaze". Christopher Lee [Saruman, Count Dooku, Dracula] and Ian Flemming [writer of James Bond] were both part of this team, Flemming himself admitted a truckload of his James Bond characters were inspired by the members of this team. I'd say the description is pretty Wreckers-esque [specially the whole "set europe ablaze" thing]. Also, it's excellent to fit with the WWII comparisons which I so often make.
I say they are like a special force of the Autobots, much like the Dionbots except a whole lot smarter. And the whole mechanic and asshole thing.
I look at the wreckers as the team you send in when the energon waste hits the ventilator, and they hit back. When they survive that is the rate of loss in that unit is appalling.
They're the IMF* of the Transformers Multiverse. They're the group you send in "off the record." *Impossible Mission Force (Mission:Impossible), not the International Monetary Fund. (Though sending in the accountants and auditors would make for a hell of story.)
I always thought of them as a bigger version of the A-Team. But then again, I never read the G1 or IDW comics.
