Brainstorm's head would pop up in back where is head normally is in robot mode.

Weirdwolf's robot head would be like Slag, open the wolf mouth totally and have the head inside.

Mindwipe's head would be the back of the bat head, I guess like Kickback, and the small point of the bat head would make him a smaller cone-head like the Seekers.

Not sure how they'd do Skullcruncher, but I would have liked it if the alligator head became his arms. Non-opening mouth of course, the alligator head would split in the middle and move to the sides and you'd add fists on them like the Seekers.

    Short answer....Yes.

I thought it was very strange that their heads popped off then turned into a robot/exo-suit. Same goes for targetmasters. How does this give them an advantage over their opponents?
There really was no reason for this at all.

Each HM figure should have their heads attached just like the 84-86 lines.

Yup. On top of all the post-movie designs going space aged vehicle in design, it was stuff like the Head/Target/Power/Micromasters, Pretenders, Sparkabots, retarded combiners like Seacons, etc. that finally killed my interest in G1 as a kid. It just became way too gimmicky and/or "out there" in concept.

    Yes.

Targetmasters are awesome, Headmasters are not.

    Headmasters are better without Nebulons.

No. They were essentially character-less. Their whole reason for being was the gimmick. Without it, there's nothing that distinguishes them.

I've always maintained that the Headmasters figures would've been better if they still had their own heads and the Nebulan was an extra head that could be slotted in when the normal head was folded away. Then they would really be partners because the TF would be surrendering themselves to bonding when needed but they could still separate and function as a team if they wanted. 'You sneak in here while I run around back and attack' kinda thing. Extra play value.
And of course it would mean the robot wasn't rendered totally useless if the Nebulan figure was lost.
It's been sorta rectified since with Energon Omega's weeny built-in head and Armada Sideways' extra head hidden in his chest.

In terms of the toys it's not so critical with Targetmasters, or even Powermasters, as there's still a full Transformer if the Nebulan is lost.
I suppose it might've been cool if the Targetmaster TF had hidden springloaded guns which popped out when the gun Nebulan was plugged into place and 'upgraded' their weapon systems. And the Powermasters had lights and powering up and revving sounds when the engine Nebulan was connected. Almost like Minicon Powerlinxing or Cyberkeys.
Of course back in the old 'Masters days that would've probably been too complicated to do on a figure, but these days I guess the only barrier is cost of making the figure with the extra needed gubbins.

Back when I was a kid we pretended they were just like the Japanese Headmasters. The USA explanation made no sense to us ten year olds.

Funny part is, we had no access to the Japanese series at all. It just seemed to make more sense that the Headmaster was the actual robot and the big robot was essentially a Transector.

You mean standard Autobots and Decepticons. Headmasters without Nebulons wouldn't be Headmasters.

Technically not true, since we know they can bond with humans.

Actually, in Japan the Headmasters didn't have Nebulons. The head unit WAS the robot, and the larger body was like a power-up suit. So Backscatter is talking about the Japanese concept being better.

How about some MiniCon Headmasters? Vehicle, robot and head. Mount the vehicle mode onto a peg on the arm or something of a larger TF for a normal Armada-style Powerlinx upgrade. Then use the MiniCon port to mount the head mode on a larger robot body for Headmaster mode upgrade.
Once again it was kinda done with Armada Sideways' MiniCons, but I'm thinking proper vehicle mode too. I want a little MiniCon tank that can become a robot or a head. With what Cyberverse Commanders are now doing in small scale I can't see that it would be impossible.

The first thing I thought of when I considered a mini-con headmaster that had a normal vehicle mode but was also the head of a larger robot was Megas XLR. Of course, Megas XLR was awesome and made fun of pretty much every Japanese super-mecha plot ever, so no complaints there.

In fact, while trying to engineer a robot that was both a vehicle and a head seems hard, the template really already exists. Armada Fire-bot essentially has the vehicle mode buckle in half to form a bank of missiles, I don't see how it would be a stretch to replace the missiles with a face.

What? Not that kind of thread? But... but... the title?

Freakishly I have that exact MiniCon here on my desk and it was what set me thinking of MiniCon Headmasters because of that missile rack mode when I posted earlier. :)

Maybe. But it was the headmaster gimmick that caught my attention.
