So the question is would you still have interest and buy 3rd party figures if they were painted differently than the intended character. I bring this up as with all the talk about IP infringment, I was curious if their would still be interest.

So if Warbot was blue, HOS Prime was green, Hercules was blue, etc...

Well, I DID buy GIant (or at least the first part, rest are preordered) in yellow. That's real-world construction vehicle colors, not G1 (sure, G2 happened to do the same, but I don't think you can copyright "yellow construction vehicles").

But a different paint job won't particularly help against infringement suits. If it's still Optimus Prime's face on that toy that turns into something that Optimus Prime turned into in one of Hasbro's properties, it doesn't matter if you paint it purple with yellow polka-dots.

Different colors, new head designs, and slight variations on both modes might be enough to skirt the IP issue. I also think using completely original art and names wouldn't hurt (which we've already seen). But I don't specialize in this sort of thing. It's just how I feel.

Anyway, I would probably still buy them (if the colors looked good).

I'd strongly consider it. Granted a lot of my attachment is for the G1 likeness, I think many of the designs are worthy of being evaluated and appreciates on their own merits.

I definitely would. A lot of these figures are amazing figures period, not because they resemble some G1 character.

If a 3P group made a figure that had nothing to do with a Transformers character I would not buy it. As much as I love FP's work, Heartmaster will get an easy pass for this very reason.

I wouldn't buy a 3P toy if I couldn't properly display it in my collection. Unless of course blue Hercules sells for 10$ complete and shipped. Big yes.

The green one cost more though...

I only purchase figures that are as close to the G1 cartoon as possible, and that doesn't just include the painting of the figure. The sculpting of the figure has to be as G1 accurate as possible as well.

No. I have no interest in Giant until he is G1 Constructicon green/purple. Only way I'd get G2 colored versions if they were $10 a figure and we know that isn't happening.

No. I only buy third party figures to fill in spots in my collection for characters Hasbro won't make. If they're inaccurate colors I don't want to bother.

I'd buy it if it comes with secret components that makes it looks classicsverse ! Hasbro will never know!

nope...sounds like too much painting to be done...i can do minor painting, but having to completely repaint a whole figure sounds like too much work for the high cost of 3P stuff

I find the 3rd Party message being mixed if that were the case. Third Parties exist to fill a hole, but if they're not the perfect fit it gets even harder to justify the price tag.

I would buy some of the figures, absolutely. It really just depends on the color and how well it works for the mold.

    Blue Warbot? Yes
    Yellow Insecticons? Yes
    Green HOS Prime? No.

Wasn't Heartmaster recently shown to be an homage to War Within Optimus?

Nah it all depends on how cool the figure is by itseçf. I mean, I do buy figures which are not that great because they portray chjaracters I´ve grown to like.

However an awesome figure doesn´t need any backstory or character reference, I make my own story for the characters (and since it is something I am doing to fill in my needs, will eventually be more satisfying to me than any character pre created by anyone else). But again in this case, the figure itself, and whatever color scheme it has, must be awesome :)
