Are those actual store finds? I can't believe a store would take either of those back! If they were photographed hanging in the store, there would be little doubt.
Your my hero. I think the hornet’s nest one might have been fake, but I’m pretty sure Tomatowave is legit. You would honestly be astounded as to how little a fuck retail workers give, and what does fly by and wind back up on shelves.
I used to work at Fred Meyer when i was younger.. it's a bit like a large target with the grocery store for those east of the Rockies. Anyway, in home Electronics we got tons of that kind of thing.. people bringing back CD cleaner kits with a blank CD in it, Sony Headphones that were obviously the ones that came with a base model walkman stuffed into the 'top shelf model' box. it used to piss me off.. but security and management basically shrugged their shoulders and accepted it. I used to hate it because i knew they were stealing, but i couldn't say anything.
I think the tomato one might be a fake. I could have sworn the original pic was rather blatantly taken on a picnic table (complete with wicker basket!), and the version shared here looks suspiciously cropped... On the other hand: (source)

I was tempted by it since it was $16 on clearance, but I don't really have an interest in the character.
I always bring repacks up to customer service. I don't have any pics to share at the moment, but 2 that I remember seeing are an Energon Hot Shot for a Movie 2 Bumblebee a number of years ago, and most recently, I remember seeing a Marvel Legends Walgreen Exclusive Ant-Man/Black Ant in a Kid Nova package at a Target. I brought him up to costumer service and the girl working there pretty much insulted me for being able to spot the difference. I never try to cause trouble, but I did get her manager involved in that one.
The issue is if they can still sell it for full price they will and if they damage it out they will get full value but that takes longer than just sitting it back out.
It's a cowardly way to steal something. I still can't believe an adult would resort to something so petty. All for a $25 toy?

I'm aware of how it works, and please don't think I'm trying to start a fight here, I'm just saying what happened. My problem with the whole thing was that when I brought the figure to the girl at costumer service, she laughed at me and said "Oh you can tell? -snicker snicker- Are you like, a nerd?" When the figure in the box looks nothing like the one on the package, it doesn't take a nerd to point it out, it takes common sense. And that was why I asked to speak to the manager.
