For my mom's birthday we always go to a different casino here in Wisconsin."We" consists of me, my wife, mom, dad, and sister. We're usually only there to play for an hour two, lose our money or come out even (or the rare extra $100 extra bucks or so!), then come home.

We went to a tiny new casino outside a small town called Wittenburg. The place was nice, but small, and didn't have much for food (just a snack bar). We asked a security guard where a good place to eat was. She suggested "Diane's", and another placed called the Harvest. We went to Diane's, but it was closed, possibly indefinitely. We were in Wittenburg at that time, so we drove around just looking for some cheap-ass local food. We came across "Klinkers Bar & Grill". We weren't picky, so we went inside.

There were 2 or 3 townie looking guys at the bar, and the bartender. They all looked at us like we were aliens, and it felt like we were interupting something. I looked to the right to see a tiny little eating area with tables and cheap vinyl tablecovers. There weren't any lights on in the place.

They don't say anything to us.
My mom asked the bartender, "Is the grill open?"
    "Yeah."
"Should we just sit down wherever?"
    "Yeah."

So we sat down, and he brought out menus which are nothing more than a laminated piece of yellow paper (which isn't the worst thing in the world, but in the context of this place it sure felt like it). He didn't say anything, didn't offer us drinks or anything. The lights were still off. We looked at the menus for awhile, but I felt depressed just being there. We started asking each other if we should just go, as it still felt like we were alien intruders who didn't belong. We waited for a little while, but he didn't come back to offer drinks or ask what we wanted. I finally just said we should leave as I thought I was going to kill myself. It was that depressing. We all just got up and left, right as the bartender was coming out to our table again. We all just walked passed him without saying a word, and left.

Ahhh, small town hospitality. What the hell is the point of even offering food and calling yourself a grill?? It's not like we walked in wearing tuxedos and evening gowns. Worst place ever.

You should have known better the second you walked into the place. Obviously it was just a simple local bar.

Hole-in-the-wall bars exist for a reason, and fine family dining ain't it. You WERE aliens.

That's complete bullshit. Common courtesy to customers when you advertise "BAR & GRILL" on your building is expected by anyone. I don't think a short greeting, turning on the lights in the dining room, and taking a drink order is that much to ask. EDIT: Okay, to put it nicely, I feel like you are representing the Unfriendly Poor Customer Service Bartenders Union, and I take offense to it.

Our options were severely limited for the area we were in. It was a very small town, and the only place we could find. We ended up going on the highway and found a decent truckstop/gastation/diner/restaurant/buffet place that had lights on, offered drinks, and had customary greetings. Even a semblance of customer service was welcome.

You have unrealistic expectations of such a place. I'm sure you'll just call bullshit on that, but it's the truth. For whatever reason you weren't wanted in the place, and you should have gotten the hint sooner.

Lesson (hopefully) learned on your part should you encounter such a place again.

You went to a place called "Klinkers", and expected a fine dining experience. You went to bar. Plain and simple.

Yeah, okay. I'll just assume that everywhere that says "Bar & Grill" on it in big letters is just a horrible, unfriendly place to eat, and I won't ever bother giving my money to a local place. I'll just go to McDonalds or some other large chain and spend it there. Great logic, defending assholes who give local bars that know how to treat customers a bad name.

What I don't understand is why you're so butthurt about the whole thing.

A tiny dump of a local bar didn't feel like feeding your family and you need to vent? Seriously? How old/sheltered are you that you've never been to place where you didn't feel welcome? Obviously they didn't care what you thought about them so you should return the favor.

Seriously. This is such horrible logic. I've been to plenty of local places touted as being a Bar & Grill (Wisconsin is ripe with them), and I've had perfectly decent or even good experiences in them.

I'm sorry that I'm such an idiot for wondering why a business would be so lacking in customer service that they would lose money on it.

And you're surprised that someboy is venting on the internet about something that in the long run won't affect their life in any way, shape or form? I guess you're no different than I.

Surprised, no. I just don't understand why it's a big deal to you - hence why I asked your age/level of sheltering.

Such a place isn't exactly rare.

I do find them to be rare around here. Most local places are friendly and actually are willing to go out of their way to be decent to prospective customers. Most shitty hole-in-the-wall bars are easy to spot, but this one didn't look bad on the outside. It actually looked okay.

It really saddens me that I get the reaction "Wow I can't believe you didn't expect to get treated like crap" instead of "Oh man that's pretty lousy. One time I was at this place and the barteneder yadda yadda yadda".

I'm so unreasonable, I guess. Maybe it's a Wisconsin thing to expect local bars to treat people decently. Afterall, there's one on every corner.

I should add that I am by no means sheltered. I'm nearly 28 years old, and I've been to my fair share of local bars. My dad could be considered a life-long townie and bar-goer, and he was amazed at how poorly we were treated. I'm sorry that wherever you live is so unpleasant. No need to take it out on other people though.

If you really thought this was such a naive, pointless post, you would have done me and yourself a huge service by just ignoring it and letting it die off.

Something like that made you want to kill yourself? :| What?

    Also

You get what you pay for?

If I want friendly customer service, I don't go looking for a place that looks "cheap-ass".

    A. No, I didn't really want to kill myself, but the vibes in the place were pretty lousy, and I've been in some cruddy bars before that were cheerier.

    B. Cheap-ass local food does not automatically = no service. There are plenty of local places serving cheap food around here that are friendly. The worst service I've had at a McDonald's was better than I had at this place. Regardless, our options were EXTREMELY limited in this area, so we didn't have much of a choice. We weren't expecting an Applebee's, just something remotely resembling service, and some half-assed bar food. Couldn't even get that.

If you don't want to bother with even the slightest modicum of service to customers, then you shouldn't be running a business at all, or at the very least you shouldn't be advertising that you "serve" food. We would have been more than happy to exchange our money for their food, I mean, that's what this country is all about, right? All we f@*&ing wanted was some acknowledgement, to turn the damn lights on, and start us off with drinks. That's IT. Why is that such a goddam unreasonable expectation of any place that serves food? If you're incapable of handling that much, then I can't imagine there's a point in spending money on ordering food and keeping it in stock, or even paying for the paint used to write "Grill" on the side of your building.

Please, none of you ever, ever open a business that serves customers.
