Surrogates and adoption agencies usually aren't keen to put children in the care of people with legitimate mental problems, along with other stringent criteria. Similarly, people with legitimate mental problems (or not meeting those criteria) aren't always using rational thought processes.

While the article says the suspect has no history of mental disorders, that's usually the explanation in situations like these, and I would be surprised if she was found to be possessing full mental faculties after she is investigated.

There are other reasons bearing a child may not be feasible, such as age, health issues, or lack of a source of reproductive material (The suspect in this case was nearly 50, for example). Also, again, mental disorders can prevent someone from going with that conclusion.

this is why they have those security tags.
My son, born in a different Southern CA hospital, ahd the tags on him and we questioned it but once they explained it, it was fine with me but scary at the same time and someone would do that.
It scares me that this women was walking amongst the nurses and no one questioned her since no one should have ever met nor seen her??
There is no clear motive yet but I'll bet you she is in the same position as me. Can't have kids, and obviously probably failed the mental health test for the adoption and so she resorted to stealing a baby in order to the baby the only way she knew how.
NOW, I do NOT condone what she has done at all. No way no how. But I'll bet you that is her motive was she wanted a baby.

Not necessarily. At her age she obviously can't have kids of her own anymore. Surrogacy and adoption can be expensive. So she resorted to trying to steal a baby. Or she maybe stole to try to sell the baby (perhaps already have a buyer).

^ What you mean obviously can't? Older women having babies are more common than you think. A 48 yr old woman can certainly have a child.

Hmmm, it's been quite a while since this kinda story popped up. This was a seemingly-regular occurrence 10-15 years ago, wasn't it?

What... the heck? They said they didn't have any record of her being mentally ill, but they had better get her re-evaluated now. It said in the article that she was asking several weird questions to a pregnant woman the week before, and if she dressed up as a nurse, this was obviously premeditated. I couldn't imagine anybody in their right mind who would think it's okay to steal someone's child.
I wouldn't say rare as much as risky. After about 40, birth defects and whatnot become much more common.

I too am not condoning what she did, but 9/10 of getting in anywhere is acting like you belong there. I'm given to understand that she was there dressed in nursing attire. I work in a fairly large building. New people get hired here all the time and introductions aren't usually a high priority for our management. sure, we have security badges, and I'll admit that if I saw someone without one, I'd probably question it, but not everyone is as diligent as I am, especially in an environment where new/unfamiliar faces is the norm.

Yes but nurses on floors such as that don't number in the hundreds there are like 12 of them, so if I saw someone I didn't know looking at a chart or roaming around the station in an area that requires security where babies wear alarm bracelets and you have to identify yourself prior to entering the area I would at least go up to the person and introduce myself and ask who they are, what they are here for (in a nice way) and ask if there is anything i could help them with. Just seems a little weird is all.
