From my wife (Special Education Teacher)
"Retardation is OK, retard or retarded not OK"

As far as the story, I hate people that try and "work the system".

My sister teaches mentally handicapped children and if you say the word retarded around her or any of the other teachers they get pissed. I think they want people to say "Mentally Handicapped" or when people ask me what she does I tell them "She teaches special education" so I guess you could get away with calling them "special"?

Generally the specific illness/situation is the preferred form. If someone has Down's Syndrome, you say they have Down's. If referring to someone in general, or a group of people, "Mentally Handicapped" or "Challenged" is preferred. If you said "Those retarded kids" to my Wife, you'd likely come to in the back of an ambulance.

'Mentally retarded' is not okay. If you have to work in the word 'retard' somewhere, you could say 'suffering from mental retardation.' That's still borderline, though.

My wife is also a special education teacher, she will use the same terminology. But that's ok, there are enough funny terms in that field of work anyway. Like assbergers (sp), and Woodcock Johnson.

It just all seems a little arbitrary. Retardation is okay, 'cause that's what they suffer from, but retard or retarded isn't. Even though they're basically the exact same words. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be an ass. I used to coach Special Olympics swimmers, but I just called 'em my swimmers and avoided the issue.

I think it's just reactionary. I bet if the original term had been handicapped or challenged, that'd be considered offensive now and retarded would be the standard.

I use to work at a place with mentally retarded and disabled people, and from what I understand, retardation is the medical term so theres nothing wrong with it, I think over the years its gotten this negative connotation from people using it out of context just to mean for someone acting dumb and not being physically born that way, so if used in the right context its not offensive, just simply a medical definition of a person's condition.

Correct. That's what it's like for every single offensive word. They used to be the standard, and now they're taboo.

It's not 'political correctness,' it's been going on for centuries. Saxons used words like shit and fuck, then the French came along and said those words were old and vulgar.

The only reason we're not using retarded, or retard, anymore, is becuase people turned it into an insult to use against seemingly non-retarded folk. They ruined it for the rest of us.

So if you know it's not inherently offensive, and it's just a social taboo that you know will pass, why do you find it to be "not okay"? To me, I'd be offended it someone used the word retard in an insulting manner, but not if they just called a person with Down's a retard in a descriptive manner. And I think it'd be obvious in most cases what they were doing.

Haha, Thanks. All I know is every teacher party I go to, all they talk about is Apergers, and Woodcock Johnson. They'll even describe how the Woodcock Johnson is rigid, and can be difficult to administer. It's the on going joke that doesn't get old for them.

And negroe isn't an insult either, but unless you're actually living in a parallel universe where it is still the sixties, you'd better not say it. It WON'T pass, I just explained how this has been going on since 1300. It will never be acceptable to call somebody a retard.
