Movie Talk: 'Oz' Could be Next Big Film Franchise

    My opinions are mixed.

ON the one hand the original Oz film is a timeless classic that would probably be better off left alone.

On the other hand I know there's a lot of things from the Oz books that didn't make it to film, so there is potential for good storytelling.

I think they should just leave it alone...but I also understand that there is a Wicked movie coming out that should be alright for a different point of view on the story.

I agree, Paladin. I love the original Wizard of Oz movie, it's a timeless classic. It's a movie that I just don't ever want to see it get remade.

Still, with all the Oz books, it might be interesting to see a series of movies based on the books... providing they're faithful adaptations, that is.

As much as I love the Oz books, I don't see this being a huge success. The books have lots of leaps in logic and extreme coincidences that might not play well to movie audiences.

I'd love to see a traditional animation feature done. Why Disney hasn't made one is beyond me. It's public domain (which they love) and would translate well to their style. The only thing that holds them up is the concept that people might not want to see any kind of update to the 30's live action version. Which is true, but so what? People would go see it if it's good..... and I bet would do a hell of a lot more buisness than Princess and the Frog did. It may even finally beat out Lion King.... or a Pixar movie.

If you think about it, Wizard of Oz '39, was only made because of the popularity of Snow White '37. What a cool way to bring it all full circle.

I'd love to see this become a reality. Return to Oz is one of my childhood favorites, and more films in that vein are more than welcomed in my book.

Love Oz. I'd love to see the story beyond just the first book get told.

Why must here be a franchise of a timeless classic and it's underrated and darker sequel?

I hope they get Guillermo Del Toro instead of immediately jumping to Tim Burton IF there is going to be a franchise.

My guess why Disney hasn't made one, might have to do with Baum's genocidal views towards Native Americans, which he published in his editorials.

I would love to see some of the oz books get a movie release. I don't get why when we get a oz follow-up a lot of times it's a new story when they have 18 or more books they can use!

I read all 14 Oz books in grade school, so there's plenty of material for them to ignore and do their own stupid things with.

The thread was updated because of Wicked's movie getting announced. In that context, nah, Wicked is not that.
