I got started on Wheeljack last night. I'm still undecided on which gen head I am going to use (or model like)

I'm gonna keep this WIP logged, and update screenshots here as well. I've taken many photos in between the ones below, which I intend to one day make a painting tutorial from.

    Process (so far)

    1)Took BB completely apart
    2) sanded the entire figure with 600, then 1200 grit 3m sandpaper
    3) taped him up (all the darker parts which I don't need white on
    4) sprayed light coats of white fusion (sprayed into a can cap, then into a bottle) onto parts I want to become white
    5) sprayed black (airbrush) on all robot insides.
    6) drybrushed the robot insides
    7) more spraying of the white
    8) on any robot part which I will later paint white or gray (colors I'll be using) I coated with metallic silver. Metallic silver typically covers any other color in 1 coat, and it's hue is mid-range, which makes silver and/or gray a perfect color for primer.

(soon I will have more updates)

parts being sprayed white with airbrush (out on my porch, where it's 70 degrees)

robot parts, painted with black, then 1st stage of drybrush (dark silver)
also shows 'primed' parts in silver.

hope this helps a new artist.

EDIT new pics (a year or so later...)

Looks good so far. Especially the robot parts. The only thing is... You might want a new drying area... If that was my porch and my custom, I'd be half afraid of something falling into the who knows where and never being found again.

    Looks great man.

I'm gonna have to check into getting me an airbrushing gun though.

From what I hear, Stockade's head makes for a good "ear"-less Wheeljack. XP

    i thought about that head.

Anyway, 'primer' level of white paint is dry to the touch already. Keep in mind, this white (matte) is only going to be on the interior parts. Once all painted & ready, I will paint the exterior last, with a high-gloss Tamiya White (made for plastics type)

Looking really nice so far. I think the white looks good as is, I can only imagine how nice the gloss will look.

Hmm...you do things just like i do. I see a lot of over spray onto the black bot mode parts though....i assume you intend on fixing those areas? When i sprayed my BB i masked everything up with intricate detail, even the cogs for the automorph got masked up so i didn't have this problem. Takes a while but its worth it. Maybe you should practice with masking a bit more and take some extra care it saves a lot of time and hassle in the future.

Im not sure this mold will work for wheeljack but im looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the head.

Creepy, I was reading a thread F_R did on Sector70, where he was re-shelling a BB & they said he didn't post there anymore...

    F_R, you alright?

lol guys. I tend to sometimes work on projects between commissions, they usually take forever. This one was about 90% complete, just never finished it.

An old thread but it's new to me. :)

What did you mean by "(sprayed into a can cap, then into a bottle)"?

ahh, I run my fusion through my air brush, goes on smoother and thinner coats.
I spray into the spray can's cap, then pour that into the reservoir on top of my airbrush. Only a little at a time though, fusion dries up super quick and won't run through the air brush well if too thick.
