    Hey guys,

It's been a while since I worked on a custom. My paint booth has been packed for a long while during my house build. Priorities, right? Anyways, I decided to do something a little different and do a WIP thread to catalog the repaint. So far, I've got the trailer/waist completed, and Onslaught is almost done. I'm doing my best to provide a G1 cartoon look with minimal changes to the Alt color scheme, with the exception of the trailer for obvious reasons. Once I complete it, I'll post a full gallery with proper pics

Edit 4 ** Vortex! This guy was pretty fun. Drab grey paint, but I think he didn't turn out too bad. Tried to give him a bit of high/low-lighting to break it up.

Blast Off is on my bench now! :)

I'm super excited about finishing up Bruticus. He's trimming up rather well, I think.

Edit 3 ** Swindle! Enter challenge 3... I wanted to go for a realistic, cartoon look? As you can see, I tried to keep the purple hood, but the rest a muted desert tan paint job. He also has a faction symbol on the hood that is covered up by his head in bot mode, but we missed it in the photos. I modified this guy a bit, too, but you'll have to wait to see how in my Bruticus reveal :)

Edit 2 ** Brawl! This guy was a bit of a challenge because I wanted to limit the detailing to make it more realistic, but not too simple to make it cartoony. I opted to only paint details in robot mode, yet keep the minimalist paint a real-world tank has. Most detailing is accomplished by just shading. This is the first figure that I modified in this set. Just a simple putty over the details on his left arm, so I could put a faction symbol.

I also have some pics of Swindle disassembled. A few should hint at where I'm going with Bruticus. Also, since these are full repaints, tons of prep work (mostly sanding and fitment testing) is required to make sure that all the moving parts don't chip/rub when being transformed. All of my later projects can be transformed (no ham-hands!) with little fear of damaging the paint. Go easy on the paint job, it's not final!

Edit 1 ** Now for some real pics! Onslaught :)  I thought about posting the torso mode, but I figured I'd just wait for that as a big reveal. I'm about 3/4 way through with Brawl

Thanks man. I used minitaire nautilus blue, then I mixed a bit of white in for the highlights.

Brawl is waiting for his photo shoot, and swindle should be done this holiday weekend.

i think its more fascinating that you can take everything apart and put it back together. I would be so confused. Looks great though.

Hehe. It can get confusing. I used to just wing it but that was like playing lego without instructions for hours. Not bad if you paint it fast but if it takes a few weeks... I started taking phone pics of it in random disassembled states and angles (probably enough to do an animated gif) and it helps a ton.

    Onslaught looks incredible.

Are you having any difficulties pulling the pins from these figures? I've left a few stress marks on Blast Off's chest panel because I thought it moved, so the thought of pulling the pins somewhat worries me. I'd love to do a full repaint in modern military colors.

Thanks! And no, not any more than normal. There are some odd pins that are hard to get out due to size of parts. I either figure out how to brace the parts so they don't flex, or I leave them together while painting. Usually I can figure a way to brace them since I pin punch on small 2x4 blocks. There were a couple parts on swindle I had to leave together since I didn't want to stress the plastic. Stressing isn't too bad since paint will cover it, but I always try to figure out how hard reassembly will be as well.

Have you ever worked with automotive paint? The metal effects look great.

i haven't, but I've thought about it. I've mostly been concerned with fumes, but at my new place my paint booth is vented outside, so I may try it at some point. Right now, I'm using vallejo metallics, and they seem to work pretty well. They also have a "metallic medium" that you can mix with other colors to get a metallic effect. It's basically just metal flake, but you can mix it in to make it subtle or all the way to pearl.

Swindle looks great that purple and tan color, nice work. What brand desert tan paint and purple did you use? I want to paint my KFC Ditka and wonder what he look like this color.

Thx! Brown is minitaire rotten wood. Purple is createx wicked violet. I mixed the highlights. A little bit of white in with the base colors.
