This is the my current project with Kelvin, MP Soundblaster. We're blasting past Soundwave and going straight for his black repainted version from Headmasters. If you're not familiar with him, he's basically just Soundwave, but everything blue is black. The toy had the double tape deck, but I'm looking to make him toon accurate, so I'm going for the classics look. The deck is built to take either G1 tapes or the Classics Ravage (pictured).

The legs are from a Cybertron Metroplex. They make him stand a full head taller than a normal MP Prime. I'm still undecided on weather or not the whole lower torso will rotate so the control panel will be his but, or if the just the panel will flip around.

This summer, I was lucky enough to find a half-sized Soundwave model kit at the Wizard World Philly con. It was a big help in learning how to build a simple tape door mechanism.

Since my Blaster and Twincast, I've been improving my technique. The thick material is PVC foam. It's more expensive than regular styrene, but it's perfect for structural stuff like this, and it LOVES Krazy Glue.

I've still got a ton of work to do, but I thought you guys would like to have a look.
    Crits and comments welcome.

That's a great start Tom! Seems like SW is getting lots of love these days, which I think he always has but this looks really good. Good luck with this guy.

That scratch built chest is super nice. Do you plan to do much with the legs? Will there be a buttom/spring mechanism to open the chest?

    Very Nice

But if I may make a suggestion: try to beef or lengthen up the arms a bit, atm they look a little stubby. Besides that, everything look top notch!

The real attack comes from the side, dude!

Thanks everyone! Sorry I've taken a while to post more, but I work retail and this is the weekend of pain.
Now for the update! I have the leg shells laid out. There might be a door or two to keep the box solid, like I did with Blaster and TC. I also have to build up the surface of the speakers to make them flush with the tape door, so I'm planning on making them dimensional. The overall proportions are a little weird compared to the original, but what are you gonna do?

very interesting concept/project! I wonder if the legs would be more accurately proportional in their "brute mode" configuration instead of full-length as you're using them now?

    Thanks Redline!
I had the same thought, but this did end up being the most practical configuration to get the feet out of the way. Either way that bridge has been crossed now.

Since the last update, I tore the shell apart and rebuilt it with better materials. I also have the transformation finalized. his lower torso will rotate so that his tape player button panel will be on his rear. A side effect will be that his legs will be inside out from his G1 form (speakers on the outside of the legs), but since I'm taking more inspiration from the toon appearance, it shouldn't be a big deal.
I found a nice deep red gel for the tape door. It's made by MIDWEST PRODUCTS CO., INC., the same company that makes sheet styrene and PVC foamboard I use.
I'm making his weapons out of pvc pipe. I have some left over from my Haloween costume (Whiplash), and it's the perfect diameter. In a wild stroke of luck, the styrene tubes fit together almost perfectly in this configuration.
The next step is to start on the surface details. I'm going to work the tape player facade up in layers with inset speakers. That and the head.
    Thanks for looking!

I'm not in love with the holes at the top of the speakers, but I'm having a hell of a time working something out to fill them. It looks extremely simple, but you'd be surprised!
