Started out as a YOTH Optimus and is now repainted to look more like his usual self. What a PITA this figure was. These are old pics. Since these I have also added some edge wear apps. Full picture gallery coming soon. He's much more reflective than appears - video coming soon.

    • Full disassembly - took a lot of pictures to use for reassembly
    • Sanding for rub spots, testing - wow a real mega PITA
    • cleanse and primer
    • multiple layers of paint for base coating
    • Wet sanding
    • top coats
    • intricate detail apps
    • panel line detailing
    • de-chrome the gold and re-chrome

Awesome! Looking forward to watching this progress. The one I'm working on right now is my first crack at a masterpiece and it's taking me forever because I didn't trust myself to do an entire disassembly like this. I had to break it down one section at a time so I could leave as much together at as possible.

What I like to do is take a ton of pictures which I use as an instructional to reassemble the figure once painted. What are some of the things you are worried about? Maybe I can help you.

Nothing specific, just paranoid that I won't remember how pieces went together. It always ends up okay though. Optimus is actually pretty much done, I just have the trailer to do.

Actually I do have a question. Which direction do the dang fuel tank pins come out? I was able to remove all the other pins but the ones in the fuel tanks I tried knocking out from both directions, on both legs, and they wouldn't budge. I might have needed to hit them a little harder but didn't want to break them. I ended up just taping around them.

You have to look at which hole is the smooth one and which is the rough looking one. I don't recall which side that is but where it tapped in is where the rough end of the pin seats into the plastic. The other end is the smooth hole and that's where the punch needs to be to tap it out.

Yeah, I think the paint or plastic around the edge of the holes on mine are just too rough or something. It's hard too tell which end is which. Both ends of the pin look the same. Oh well.

50 pieces? I think you're being modest, I didn't even pop pins and my jig with 78 slots was full with half of his legs having nowhere to go, lol. Looking good so far, I'm also doing another one too, though I'm starting with the trailer this time. Seems the figure itself has so much detail that the trailer is almost daunting by the time you get to it. What kind of paint are you rolling with?

Oh, for those asking, the easiest way to identify the knurled end of the pin is to look for the larger diameter hole. One end is always a hair bigger, and the center of it is depressed slightly from when they set it in place, smooth end is machine sheared.

Thanks man, yeah there are way more than I thought. I'm mainly using Model Masters enamels along with MM Custom Lacquer Systems paint.

    Posted...well partially anyway :)
