    Final-ish Product:

I recently got my hands on the Chaos on Velocitron set all for the soul purpose of getting Nautica. While I'm glad I got her, the set, including her, is pretty lackluster in my opinion.
    IMG_0016.JPG IMG_0017.JPG

So with that. I'd like to take my hand at fully customizing the Hasbro Nautica figure to something more to my liking. This is going to be my first full fledged custom and with that, I plan to document the process as much as I can and would also welcome some feedback from the community as I'm going through it. I want to swap parts, add parts, sand, paint, and seal.

Want I want to try to avoid doing if possible is altering the main parts of the original figure as much as possible, meaning no drilling, or cutting of the main Nautica figure. But I'm perfectly okay with breaking a sweep.

    My to do list:
    - Visor and antenna for the head
    - New Alt-mode
    - Possibly new chest plate
    - New propeller position in robot mode
    - Paint (Obviously)

Here's where I'm at so far:

New legs, courtesy of Scourge. I liked using the legs backwards like most people have done with their Scourges and Sweeps:
    IMG_0018.JPG IMG_0019.JPG

New backpack donated by Brainstorm. From here you can see, I flipped The shins so the knees could act as heels and so the knees could work as knees:
    IMG_0020.JPG

Comparison with Blurr I kept the hips backwards so there could be a peg for a flight stand in alt mode. Covered it up by flipping the seat all the way down. What do you guys think? Might it look better with the original waist and seat flipped up the way Blurr has it?:
    IMG_0021.JPG

    Some Possible Alt Modes:
    IMG_0025.JPG IMG_0022.JPG IMG_0032.JPG
    IMG_0028.JPG IMG_0027.JPG

Possible chest piece to replace door chest. Not sure if I should swap and use the Brainstorm arms, or keep the Blurr style arms. What do you all think?
    IMG_0030.JPG IMG_0031.JPG

This is where I am so far. I want do this in a quick time frame and posting before completing it seems to be the way to help me to do that. What do you all think so far? Any feedback is appreciated :)

(May ask for sanding and painting tips in the near future.)

That's really cool, but I noticed there are some gaps at the knees. Someone once cut out the knees and put them in the gaps of the new knees.

Looks pretty good! I also like how the third possible alt mode looks best!

I'm REALLY having a hard time with those huge blocky thighs. While Nautica definitely has big ol' stompy boots that Scourge actually does better than Blurr, the LEGO-brick thighs just don't sit right. They're one of the handful of parts on her design that are decidedly feminine.

I also THINK I like the stock arms better in the alternate mode than the Brainstorm arms, although pegging the turbofans a little further back on the altmode with the Brainstorm arms might change my mind.

I'm not profoundly in love with the altmode as-is regardless - is it possible to keep the robot chest/cockpit on top while also having the Scourge front-end on top as well, or is that limited by the transformation?

This is an exciting project and I want to see where you go with it, but I like the character a LOT so I'm probably overly critical... ;)

The knee gaps do bother me and I'm trying to think of what I can friction through that long notch to make knees.

I've looked through my collection to see if there were any compatible legs and so far, Scourge is the most boat like. CW Vortex was also a contender, but it's the same deal, big chunky legs. And it looks more like a rocket than a boat/submersible.

    IMG_0037.JPG IMG_0038.JPG
I'm leaning more towards keeping the arms as well.

I am trying to think of other ways to do the alt mode. Here it is with the original cockpit up top. It looks alright, but the gaps a much more noticeable.

Here are some other (What I consider failed) alt modes:

Thanks, I hope it turns out well. :)

Oh woof. The THIGHS from Vortex look right, but the altmode is really obviously a helicopter being eaten by Blurr....

I hope you appreciate how many good bots lost their legs to give Nautica the thighs she deserves:
    IMG_0043.JPG
Now she desperately, DESPERATELY needs a knee donor. These gaps are an eye sore.

Sidenote: The visor is not permanent. I just wanted to see how well the color would go with the figure. I really like it personally.

    UPDATE:

Added wing posts that the turbines slot into. I wanted the posts to be hinges so that they could pose in an open and closed position. But for now I'll settle for parts forming arms with 2 positions, Up wings and down wings. They also peg into alt mode.
I used the legs of knock off Ravage USB that broke on me pretty much the day I bought it. I finally got some use out of it.

Do you still have the kneecaps from Scourge? Because of you do them you can glue them into those gasps of the new knees.

Might I ask what you made your visor out of, and how you made it? That looks really good

UPDATE: Earmuffs, antenna and Visor version 2. I'll add all these updates to the first post after I'm done with the whole thing.

Sorry if this seems slow. Unfortunately I have exams and work to worry about.

I used a Binder divider. Super cheap and and easy to use. I used the same thing for my Voltron shield. Same color too:

Sorry for lack of updates, School and work have been keeping me busy. Anyway, I've started painting the figure and I realized something. I'm not very good at painting. It seems to come on pretty thick even when I try to thin it out.
Also, I can't match the purple for anything. It's a very bright and vibrant purple and I can't figure out the color combination. I'm thinking I can't get it with the type of paint that I have. Anyway, I wanted to post an update with what I have so far. And there really isn't much left. I may put on a few more coats and then protective glossy coats but after that, there isn't much unless I can find a way to match the purple and repaint her.

I still have a lot to learn, but for now, this project is done.

But for now, here she is:

    Grey bottom coat:
    IMG_0052.JPG

I also added knees! (They were donated by a scrap Generations Skids. [They're his feet] It seemed appropriate):

    Possible Altmode:

If anyone has any painting tips, please feel free to share. Thank you :)
