Last I remember Orci/Kurtzman tried not to have the robots mass-shift, like back in the 80's, everything according to them (and Bay I'm sure) had to look real.
The example that was provided was how megatron's body mass was consolidated into a small weapon Screamer would yield.

I'm still not sure if this would be a good idea still, I would like the same.

I defiantly don't think mass shifting would work in a live action film.

I'll forgive it in Prime, but not in the movies.

    Why wouldn't it work?

I don't see the problem with mass shifting. Their technology is superior to ours, right? It stands to reason then that mass shifting could be possible.

Plus, it would really expand the possibilities on alt modes. Yeah, maybe I'm just longing for Soundwave to be a tape player again. :D

There's some things that just wouldn't look right in live action.

I can forgive the Allspark, as it's a magical MacGuffin, and Frenzy turning his head into a cell-phone, 'cause at least it was close, yet a 30-foot robot folding up into, say, a boom box, is way too out there for a live action film.

If it didn't work in Watchmen, it won't work for TF either.

    Not that it CAN'T work.
It could work, but only subtly I think.

I don't wanna see a huge Robot turn into a Boombox which can then be easily picked up by a human being.

More like Frenzy's head, because - let's face it - his head was hollow anyway! (har har har) So there was more folding room for it to turn into a phone.

I'm indifferent to the idea, but I don't see why it can't work and particularly can't sympathise to those who object the notion, frankly, I find it silly that people can complain about how unrealistic it is but yet are okay with the whole concept of transformers, sentient robot beings from outerspace. Irony!!!! So why the hell not, the reality ship sailed a long time ago once the sentient robotic beings from a distant planet entered the discussion!

I think it would only work once in a subtle way like in ROTF when the twins went from 2 halves of a car to 2 cars. Not a big difference but I remember the reaction the Non obsessed members was awesome to watch, well mine too.

There's been mass-shifting since the first movie. But they don't look like they're mass-shifting. You see Optimus transform and you believe he can actually be a truck.

Lets say I dislike obvious mass-shifting.

Yet both Frenzy and the Allspark mass shifted.

    Agreed.

As has been said, Frenzy did it in a fairly subtle way, as compared to how mass-shifting had been done previously. There was some weight loss/gain between forms, yet nothing to the level of multi-ton robots turning into ten-pound guns.

And the Allspark has an excuse! It was magical!

I've figured that the transformers are made up of tiny little robots like the cells in our body and have the ability to control them to make them rearrange into any shape they desire, as long as it's exactly or close to the bot's mass.

If you look at Frenzy's head, it's made up of panels that are pretty thin. I can see those panels compressing/overlapping each other to form Mikaela's phone.

I think it's a silly thing for your suspension of disbelief to be destroyed over.

You know, I just remembered the second common complaint about Frenzy's mass-shifting: his robot mode weight compared to his CD player mode. A stewardess was able to carry him, which leads to the question of how much Frenzy weighs...

I wouldn't rely on any guidebooks for the answer, as we all know that, like the comics, the moviemakers don't really give a damn about them.

Lol, even more ammunition to ridicule the absurd displeasure of mass-shifting by the masses!

So, based on your signature, I assume you're part of the crowd that wants Megatron to be a gun again and Soundwave to be a tape deck again, purely for the sake of nostalgia? And therefore, believing that this is a stupid idea is somehow absurd?

Am I grasping at straws here, or is this a valid assumption?
