The handheld market was already difficult to enter before (one look the endless fallen foes of Nintendo can tell you that), and now with the popularity of smarthphones it got even tougher.
Besides, Microsoft already has windows8 and with a good enough phone will make it kinda pointless to develop a handheld, especially when you consider how weak their position is in japan, the biggest and most important handheld market.

While I'm not quite sure what the hell your last was about to be honest, I don't think Microsoft will dabble in the handheld market for the foreseeable future. Nintendo and now Apple have the market in a death grip, and while the PSVita is doing okay apparently, it is also Sony's Fifth Attempt with the handhelds in terms of hardware (six if you want to be an asshole and count the Playstation Pocket from the PSone era) and it's STILL unknown (at least to me) if they've finallly captured a market that works financially or not. Seeing how Sony is doing, I don't think Microsoft would want to risk it.

That being said, a portable Multiplayer Halo game with 3G support would blow my goddamn mind.

With Windows Phones, and Windows Tablets that can handle PC games, I'd say they have no reason to. If they released the newer Halo games on PC, we'd be set.

    Fixed ;)

Besides, no one can compete with Nintendo in the handheld market, nobody.

I don't really care either way, though the idea of playing Halo on the go sounds awesome.

I think the only way MS could succeed with a handheld is simply making a handheld Xbox 360. You can carry over your gamertag and earn achievements and play the same games the console can play. There would just be too much competition if they just wanted to release their own new portable system.

MS would have to pull something spectacular out of the bag for it to succeed - a high-spec handheld console alone isn't enough to cut it, as Sony & Atari (remember the Jaguar?) have proven. Nintendo have dominated the handheld market for over two decades, and with good reason.

I don't think so. They'd be real late to the party if they did.

No. Again windows phone is the closest thing. They even have Xbox live for the phones. It a hard market if your name is not Nintendo. The psv is having a tough start, it sad when the psp is still being bought over the psv right now. I think Microsoft has a better chance over Sony but they still can't beat Nintendo. The ds is the most purchased game system ever and the 3ds sold more systems in it 1st year than the original ds. This shows that the 3ds is filling the big shoes it was left to fill.

Unless I have floated into an alternate dimension the Jaguar was not a handheld console.
