So my son just started getting into watching Toy Story. I have seen it probably 10 times in the last 3 days, which is better then watching damn Barney episodes.

Well, in either case, I always wondered why we saw every toy in the trilogy except for the transformers?

The only thing I could come up with is that they would be cooler then Buzz. Other then that, no reason. TFs should be in Toy Story 4 if it ever comes out.

Were there any MOTU toys in it? G.I. Joe? TMNT?

Probably because it was 1995 and in the middle of the G2 era? By that point, Transformers was a franchise struggling to survive essentially and many of the well-known characters from the series before had either been killed off or just phased out in favor of toys who did not show up in the cartoon.

Additionally, while Transformers may have been a common name, the toys in the movie that had real-life counterparts were EXTREMELY well known long before. Mr. Potato head has been around since 1952, the green army men are easily found in a hundred different versions from multiple companies in any store that sells toys, and anything else that was based off of a real-life toy had been around longer than Transformers. I think the idea was to use toys that had a nearly 100% garentee of being found in any kid's bedroom of the time, while most of the toys were made up (Woody, Buzz, etc.)

You'd think Toy Story 3 woulda had something. I woulda love to have seen Optimus Prime and Megatron like chilling out at the day care or something. :lol

Some times it's a licensing issue, some times it's not wanting to mix things, and some times it's just a writing choice.

Most of the toys in Toy Story don't have a cartoon background that says how the characters must act so the writers had total freedom to make the characters exactly like they needed them for the movie.

Plus if you included someone like Prime then that would diminish the role of Woody and Buzz because Prime is always shown as the noble hero.

    I'm kinda surprised they didn't use a transformer-like toy in TS3.

That's how I saw it. Using toys with a strong background to the character limits what they can do for the story.

Maybe Hasbro just didn't want to give permission for Disney to use The Transformers likenesses in the Toy Story Movies. Maybe it was a battle of egos, Hasbro Vs. Disney, LOL!

I had wondered about this too..and came to the same conclusion. Figured it was not likely to happen either.

Disney had a business relationship with Mattel at the time.

Except Hasbro/Plyaskool's very own Mr. Potato head plays a rather major role in the movies.

^Those are TakaraTomy's toys though, not Hasbro's, and their license is with Walt Disney Inc. Japan, which is a different matter from having a license with the main American branch.

Yeah, Lee Unkrich answered on Formspring that they just try to use characters without a history already behind them - especially with main characters.

Buzz meeting a cameo of Prime or Megatron at Sunnyside in Toy Story 3 would've been cool, though.

Though, what version of the toys would most likely appear, and which figure would they base it on? Presumably the Classics Prime - simple and iconic.

How'd he address the use of Mr Potato Head and the Green Army men?
