In the G1 series, I've noticed in all the episodes featuring the Dinobots, all the Dino's have a red chest. Except, Swoop is blue! Yet, with his G1 toy, his chest is red. However, his Diaclone and now KO-Diaclone figure has a blue chest.

So, I'm just wondering why is Swoop blue, when the others are red? That almost indicates to me that he's the leader of the bunch being different color then the rest. But, he's obviously not since Grimlock is leader.

Any thoughts to why Swoop is different in this respect?

I'm going to go with "had his character model drawn up based on the Diaclone toy before they changed its colors and then never corrected it".

Since Swoop wasn't one of the first Dinobots to appear on TV, and (IIRC) he didnt' appear on the first ad for them either, i'm guessing he was added relatively late, possibly under fairly tight time constraints, as Hasbro and Takara were trying to turn out more product.

Also see: Slag with Red face, Snarl with red head, and vac chromed swords/missiles.

I assumed they were just going with the diaclone colors for all of the dinobots.

Well, Slag actually did come with a red face, but only here in Canada, I know cuz I have one. I've never seen Snarl with a red face ever, and AFAIK the Dinobots never had vac chromed swords, missiles yes, but I've only ever known their swords to be red. I did have a vac chromed Sludge swrod, but I was very aware that it was a Diaclone accessory, and not a Hasbro release.

Red face Slag: Relatively short production.
Snarl red HEAD (see what i posted) shown on toy photos on packaging.
Chrome missiles, swords, also shown on toy photos on packaging.

IIRC, Hasbro staff said planning of the first year was hectic, i'm guessing planning the second year was fairly tight too.

Perhaps the change from Diaclone colors more generally may be explained by Takara wanting to differentiate them from Dinosaur Robo toys already released in Japan?

    Or maybe not.

Did all five Dinobots come from the Diaclone era?

All of the characters from the first two seasons (except Jetfire/Skyfire and Shockwave) are from Diaclone or Microchange.

Okay, we know Jetfire came from Macross/Robotech. But where did Shockwave come from? I think he's genuinely a TF isn't he?
Or did the gray RadioShack version come first?

Pre-Transformers Shockwave was originally released by a company named ToyCo as the "4 Changeable Astro Magnum". The RadioShack "Galactic Man" version was also licensed, however.

Of note, he's also the only Transformers toy that didn't originate with Takara that was released by Takara during Generation 1.

Jetfire was also not originally a Takara, but a Bandai.

Just about all the 84 and 85 TF's came from Diaclone,Micro-man or Micro-change by takara.

Shockwave,Jetfire,Roadbuster,Whirl, Omega Supream and the 4 Deluxe Insecticons were the only general released TF's from the first 2 years that werent.

Grimlock is differentiated by his enormous GOLD chest. He does have red underpants though. :)

Blue Swoop is a Diaclone colouring anomaly. There are a few of those in the first couple years of G1... Swoop just had the distinction of being an error that made it all the way to the finished cartoon.

And then there are the errors with no basis in anything, like Blue Rumble and Red Frenzy. ;)

Ahhh... good ol' Shackwave. The only Shockwave I ever owned (and still own). He was half the price and almost as cool. :D

Isn't that also the reason that for a long time he was never officially re-released?

With my recent interest in "repaints", I might have to find me a Shackwave sometime.
I actually remembered having him as a kid and I liked the gray better than the purple on Shockwave.

This isn't about Diaclones or wanting a blue-Bluestreak.
I just wanted to know why Swoop was blue and other Dinobots were red. Question answered, thank you!

Also never released by Takara as part of their TF line.
