Why is there "soft" delete anyway?

Sometimes, I simply don't like my page cluttered with messages. But why do we have a "soft" delete anyway? It still occupies unneeded space so it's practically identical to just having the comment/message stay there.

Soft Delete allows us to keep tabs on what was deleted. A hard delete would also remove posts from someone's post count, and a lot of people aren't too keen on that.

    That's not really fair.

Not really sure what "fair" has to do with the question.

Some people (me included) don't want their pages cluttered with stuff.

It's a necessary evil - to look at it from another perspective, hard delete permanently removes posts including those that we as staff might potentially need to view as a part of moderating people.

I understand, it's just that I'm not a big fan of it since I can't even change my reasoning for deleting it. I forgot that I could delete comments without leaving a reason but just to get it out of the way, I wrote "Q" because I thought that it wouldn't let me delete stuff without it and now I feel kinda stupid.
