Yeah, I know it's because he was based on an existing toy with a different design than the Diaclone/Microchange. But he's been around for 20 years now and never had a redesign, been an important character in pretty much every comic book (although hardly in the cartoons), but still I don't think anyone has ever tried to answer why the heck he looks like he does. One reason might be that he's old. I don't know how old he is but he sure seems to have lots of experience. Then again, no other old characters have a weird face like that. There aren't many other figures with similar designs (except Whirl) at all, again because it's not part of the general TF design. The only real explanation I have is that he prefers it that way. Without a face to betray his emotions, he can be a pretty good schemer (of course it's the other way around with his design influencing his personality, though). Then again, there must be some benefit to having an actual face or other schemers like Starscream wouldn't have one (except maybe for looks: Screamer certainly would care more about that than Shockwave).
