Was just wondereing. I know Hasbro has to keep the name in use, but besides that. why is Optimus a Prime? Not holding a Matrix, Academy dropout, and not "programed" to be a leader or a hero according to Leader Ultra Magnus (guess he found time to deal with it). In the Animated Univerese, could Prime just be a name?

I think, maybe, in this universe, Prime is just a name and not a "rank" as it were. As for the Matrix... well let's just wait and see, huh?

Now that the movie has come out, I think we are in the jesus-cube era so the power of primus rots in a box somewhere. Prime is just a rank and not the mantle of the living god like in the matrix days.

I am curious if we will see this explained in an episode, maybe Prime had a pre-prime name?

I'm inclined to believe it's just a name as well. But wouldn't that make Sentinel and him...brothers?

I think they just want to re think the whole Prime thing. Remember Prime was Orion Pax in the original G1 cartoon and became pals with Megatron before Megatron destroyed him for power. Alpha trion made Orion Pax into Optimus Prime. I guess Hasbro does not want that and wants Prime to earn being Prime. At least that's what I believe.

Prime means different things in different continuities.
In some it a similar role to a pope, in others it's the rank of the supreme commander.

In animated it either is just a name or some not-so-high military rank.

I'm thinking it's just a name. Perhaps a rather prestigious one that carries some associations with the bigger "families" of noble Cybertronians or something. So the Primes are practically Autobot royalty, they typically end up at the academy and usually get high end command roles. But you get the odd black sheep of the family who's never quite lived up to expectations - like Optimus.

Probably because he's a red truck, the main robot character and also got a similar head to past Primes.

Sibling rivalry? Maybe they lost touch and got bitter over it. (Sentinel at least)

Okay, watching this for the first time now...and I can't come up with a reason other than "branding." The 'brother' thing is as likely a possibility as anything, I suppose. But he certainly doesn't seem to be the epic leader we've seen in other continuities.

I believe they just wanted to use familiar names and mix in some new ones. Although I am not too fond of the choices they used....

A perfect example is my 6 year old son. He loves the show and his favorite character is Optimus Prime. Not Optimus but Optimus Prime. He only knows him as that. Name recognition for the viewers. Nothing more.

It's probably just Hasbro bringing familiarity into it.

Because...Who wants Transformers - Optimus Prime

It'll help the sales by reusing names over and over, even if the persona is drastically changed.

The kid who's Favorite is Bumblebbe will keep buying Bumblebee, right?

Prime means,,,, maybe he graduated High School?

    I dunno.

I'd like to think it's a rank, like Captain. Magnus might equal General. Might be cool if there are (in this continuity at least) even MORE Primes out there.

Then "General" Magnus can order, "Primes! concentrate your fire on Devastator, I'll DEAL with Megatron.":popcorn

Maybe "Prime" is like a "merrit badge"? "Very good Timmy, you learned how to start a fire. You're now Timmimus Prime." :)

That's my thinking. Prime is a Captain rank. Optimus is the leader of a repair ship, and that's Captain grade. Sentinal is a higher functionary at military command, so that's a Captain grade. Magnus (or maybe Ultra) is the supreme leader, so his title is General grade.

    Or it's random.

I actually might know the answer to this one.
In the G1 cartoons there was an episode where it showed how Orion Pax a damaged warehouse robot was turned into Optimus Prime after a scrap with Megatron.

The robot who made or rebuilt him (OP) introduced him as the new leader, he said his full name was Optimus Prime, not just Optimus.

This was when Optimus Prime first seen by the Autobots (way before Optimus Prime was ever on Earth) as this G1 episode shows.

This is a link to that episode on Youtube.

:lol  @ the Jesus-cube. That is what I shall call it henceforth!

But yeah, if Ultra Magnus is in charge, and his name clearly has no "Prime" in it, I think Prime might be a title or sign of relation.

Magnus and Ultra sound pretty high-up ranking terms. Mayber Prime has been replaced with one of them.

I'm thinking it's more along the lines of a designation, he could have been in the cybertronian elite guard, if he apparently hadn't screwed up somehow. I'm sure they'll get to that later in the show.
