Yeah, I think the simple explanation is that RID is only in continuity with the Prime cartoon, and none of the other Aligned media.

Sideswipe is clearly separate to the guy from the novels and High Moon games as well, given that him and Strongarm are explicitly a lot younger than Bumblebee, probably born after Prime.

If you wanted to fanwank an explanation, I'd probably go for RID Grimlock having named himself/been named after the legendary Dinobot of old.

Well I the only thing that's stopping me from believing RID Grimlock just named himself after the original Grimlock is that it's kind of hard to picture that there happened to be two different dinobots that happened to turn into the same dinosaur.

I mean I guess Shockwave could have built a 2nd version of Grimlock using the schematics he had obtained from Grimlock but then that would leave the question of where the original Grimlock is.

If Tales of the Beast Hunters is taken as canon to NuRiD, FoC Grimmy's still on Cybertron and may be in a position of authority over at least New Spark, if not part of the Autobot High Council. In fact, that might have been a neat twist, having the real reason Grimlock was on the Alchemor being that he was accused of impersonating a governing officer due to their shared names.

Who reduced Prime to a head, took out Megatron, and became leader of the Decepticons? Shockwave did!
Who mucked with universal streams and almost destroyed the IDWverse? Shockwave did!
Who gave the FOC Dinobots their dino modes? Shockwave did!
Who reduced the captain of the Ark and the big badass Dinobot commander into childish dumbasses? SHOCKWAVE DID!

My belief is that Grimlock at some point had his mind repaired (though not completely, as RID Grimlock is still a bit ditzy at times), and became less aggressive without having to rely on feeling rage to change shape. Of course, he's still Grimlock, and he's still a little larger than life.

Who got killed by a parachute, SHOCKWAVE DID!

My God, the writers for the movies :banghead:

But anyway back to the original topic, Seriously though. Aligned probably has more continuity errors then the movies do themselves. There is no point in it even existing anymore (Isn't completely scrapped by now, idk, I don't work for Hasbro). IF you want a decent in-universe explanation, he is probably just a completely different bot named Grimlock. Or he can be shockwave's experiment if you want, doesn't really matter at this point.

"AH! A SHEET! A SHEET! ALL MY LOGIC AND AWESOME AND I'M DEFEATED BY A SHEEEEEEET!"

Obscure references aside, I agree, that moment was dumb.

On topic, I like to think this is a different Grimlock who just happens to look like a Tyrannosaur.

More likely he named himself/was named Grimlock because he looks like a Tyrannosaur, and therefore like the war hero.

A few posts backed I even mentioned the possibility that RiD Grimlock could be a 2nd Grimlock that Shockwave created as a replacement when he was unable to control the original Grimlock. Because if you look around in Fall of Cybertron, Soundwave had the schematics for all the dinobots, even talking about how he managed to rework their systems in order to make the transformations possible. It does align with how Shockwave would want to salvage something he deemed a powerful weapon and would give an explanation on why RiD Grimlock has the Decepticon insignia.
