I'm not sure why, but I was thinking about the game of rock, paper, scissors. I understand that scissors cut paper, and rock blunts scissors, but how does paper defeat rock? If I throw a rock at someone it'll hurt just as much regardless of whether I've gift-wrapped it. I've tried Wikipedia, who have a needlessly extensive article on the subject, but no explanation as to why the three items were chosen. So, does anyone know, or even have a good guess? And how could paper defeat rock?
Apparently there is a varient of the game that adds dynamite as an option, with it destroying rock and having it's wick cut by scissors. That does make far more sense than paper.
I like the That 70's Show version better. Foot > cockroach Nuclear bomb > foot cockroach > Nuclear bomb
I actually worked at a summer camp and tried teaching this game to a 6 year old. you know how people often say "shoot" right before showing their symbol? the kid thought it was "shoe" and made up a symbol with his thumb sticking up and his 4 fingers sticking straight out with the tips curled in. he said shoe beats everything.
I'm guessing its because its relatively hard to think of something that can: 1: be defeated by paper 2: defeat a rock and 3: be easily formed with the hand. I'm guessing it was somewhat of a compromise.
If something cannot be seen, does it exist? It's one of those philosophical questions. Or I'm just BSing you.
I never have understood either, because a rock is much heavier than paper, meaning even if a piece of paper covers it, the rock could get out, and if you put the rock on the paper, shouldn't the rock win, because its holding the paper down? Think of the rock as a paperweight? It doesn't sound right to me either. Hey, lets make our own version pplz!?!
I can imagine that there was great turmoil over this when the game was created and a debate that lasted for many days occured. What else can you make with your hand though??
