Is there a reason explained in the story somewhere?

Not sure the official reason but they probably realized they'd get better ratings with Optimus Prime in the show. Since Prime was dead, they got the next best thing, a look-a-like.

Yeah, there was a story reason in Masterforce.

    From TFwiki:

    okay,

"Devil Z stole several transtectors, including one intended to be used by the legendary Autobot leader Optimus Prime, from an area of space known as the G Nebula."

so they had built a trastector for prime before he was killed then? im still a little confused on how optimus would have used a trastector. i guess you dont have to be a human and wear the little bracelets then. o_O

I think the transtector was to be used to resurrect Optimus.

Because he IS Optimus Prime. When that toy was released in the states it was called Power Master Optimus Prime. He just has a different name in Japan. Probably was meant to be a different character that just looks like Optimus Prime and he could have the same and still be a different character. Optimus Primal says Hi.

Not really, but kind of. For the PM Prime TRU reissue in 2003 they released the whole set as Powermaster Optimus w/ Apex (God Bomber) and Ginrai (instead of Hi-Q, which is what the Powermaster engine was called for the original PM Prime release)

Why did Masterforce never get a proper English dub.

I would have loved to see them do the retcon of Ginrai being Optimus Prime.

Since the Apex Armor/God Bomber wasn't a part of the toyline, they didn't stick it in the comic. Don't think any Japanese only characters made appearances. It wasn't until Dreamwave when Japanese items made cameo appearences.

Its not that special. The marvel comics treat the super mode as his normal robot mode. Not sure if he even transforms into the smaller robot.

He's seen as the cab robot a few times. Obviously when he's first rebuilt as a Powermaster before he's told he can combine with his trailer, but if memory serves he used his smaller robot form at that cosmic carnival too, but it was drawn to look more like his normal original G1 body (no cab front on his back for example), but with wheels in his heels/ankles. After that though I think he more or less just sticks to his combined robot form.
