I've noticed a lot of people flipping out saying that Battleship is like the Transformers movies. When I saw Battleship in theatres, I didn't think that much of Transfomers when I saw it. The only things similar, in my opinion, are the robot sounds and the explosions. Plus, there are ENORMOUS differences.

    1. Transformers was a toyline. Battleship was a BOARD game.

    2. The aliens are not robots like the Transformers are. They're human-sized living, breathing organisms in exo-suits. The Transformers ARE robots.

    3. The film is NOT directed by Michael Bay. It's Peter Berg doing this film.

So, yeah, I personally didn't think it was that much like Transformers.

I thought Battleship was OK. Hate me all you want for it, my opinion's not changing.

    They're using the same formula:

1 - Based on Hasbro toys.

2 - Dumb protagonist with Fanservice woman or something.

3 - Big Damn Action scenes.

    4 - Big Damn Robots.

5 - Big Damn United States Military.

    6 - Blockbusters.

Key-difference is one is well-done, the other isn't [in before someone says Battleship is the well-done one].

    Add to that list:

7 - Music composed by Steve Jablonsky.

Plus they're aesthetically and tonally identical. The Battleship machines look just like Bayformers. Same graphics company or something, if I remember right, so it makes sense.

    Add

    8) It was explicitly marketed as "FROM THE PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU TRANSFORMERS" with a trailer that aped the aesthetics of the Transformers films.

Pretty much all of the above except this time they focus more on the robots and alien ships than the humans.

This. I haven't seen the film, but from the clips and trailers they couldn't have been trying to ape the Transformers films more. The cinematography, sound design and art department absolutely scream Michael Bay. Add the fact that it seems to have been equally as dumb and you have your answer.

Because their litterally dumb alien invasions action films based on Hasbro properties except the difference is that one franchise proved to be successful and the other floped because their were better films out at that week.

I think Battleship flopped because there was no contributing fiction from which to draw any story.
Its a movie based on a board game where you dictate the bombing of an opposing naval fleet from a vertical grid and attempt to obliterate the opposing fleet while your opponent does the exact same goddamn thing. Even Uwe Boll and the crew for the Postal film had more to work with.

With Transformers there was 20+ years of fiction from which Roberto Orci and crew could draw inspiration.

Painfully ironic, considering that's what we wanted in the Transformers movies, isn't it?
