I grew up with the Transformers. I watched the cartoon as a kid and played with the toys. The characters are fun and the toys are awesome!

Characters mainly, but I guess it was the whole idea of giant alien robots kickin' other giant alien robot's butts...makes for some good action. To sum it all up nicely tho I'll just say the lore drew me.

    Uh, because of the porn?

Seriously what's up with the first part of the first post? Me no understand.

When I was a kid I loved the comics, the toys and to a lesser degree the cartoon. The cartoon at the time was on once a week and I frequently missed it.

These days it's the nostalgia that drew me back in, and the coolness of the toys kept me interested. I couldn't give a rats ass about the TV shows, and I like the new films up to a point where I understand they're nothing like my childhood TF's.

For starters, I wasn't as big of a fan as I am today. You can tell from my name that I'm a ninja and grew up loving ninjas and samurais and all that, but I always had a soft spot for robots. I loved Super Robots and Gundams and giant robot monsters. Plus, I watched Challenge of the Gobots and loved it (It was what we had back in the day).

From then, I've been in love with the concept of transforming robots. Especially jet robots. And with the live action movies, I felt even more in love from what I used to back in the day.

Toy wise, I like how they are like numerous toys in one: A robot, alternate form, and a puzzle, so it got more play value compared to a regular toy that you can only pose it and nothing more.

I love robots. I have yet to see a book, TV show or movie about robots that I didn't like at least a little. The only exception is that shitty Robotman cartoon and toyline in the 80's but that thing was more like the bastard offspring of Ziggy and a Care Bear than an actual robot.

That forum was about hating porn. When someone asked why, the thread was locked. That would never happen anywhere else. So I decided to ask the same question here- But relevant to Transformers.

Truth? What got me into it was seeing a car turn into a robot and thinking, "It's two toys in one! Gimme, gimme, gimme!"

Then I watched the TV show and just fell in love with Optimus Prime, Soundwave, Megatron, Bumblebee and all the rest, particularly as their show was on in time to see when I got home. That the smaller mini-bots and mini-cons were little enough to slip in my pocket and take to school were a huge bonus. Cosmo probably spent more time exploring the school than any other bot. That my Transformers fit in smashingly well with my friends' G.I.Joes made them even more popular. I still remember Shockwave transforming and mounting to the top of a Hiss tank. And then there was the movie which only fueled my fanboying.

So at the heart of my obsession is it reminds me of a simpler, more imaginative time.

I'll stick with my usual run-on sentence answer...

Because, as an ultimate 'boys toy', it doesn't get much better than a fiction about two warring factions of gigantic good & evil warrior alien robots that also have the ability to transform into awesome things like military jets & tanks, sleek sports cars, weapons, planes, metal beasts, bases & cities, f'ing dinosaurs (!) and can even combine together in some cases to make even bigger robots, all the while being backed (in the 80's) by insanely wicked toys, an ongoing comic, and a quality animated TV show that breathed life & personalities into the plethora of iconic characters that made up this particular fiction/franchise. It truly doesn't get any cooler than that,

    That's why :)

I grew up on G1 reruns and Beast Wars. I recognize the G1 cartoon series for what it is, which is a media support instrument(ie. toy commercial). That's not to say that decent writing wasn't present but it was admittedly a rarity. With this in mind, I loved Transformers as a child due to the visceral appeal I had at that age for robots, vehicles, action stories, and toys.

As a teenager, Beast Wars helped me to further cultivate interest in Transformers because it was the latest branch of the franchise and that I was curious about the concept of beastformers. I've always been more of a fan of vehicle alt modes but Beast Wars was a nice and welcome shift in variety.

As an adult, years later, I watched the 2007 live action movie and was reminded of my fondness for Transformers. This fondness was fully brought back to the fore when I began to watch TFA.

From that point on, I've worked on catching up on various aspects of the Transformers franchise I've missed over the years. Today, I love Transformers because it's a great example of a product line transcending its original design purpose. Yes, at the end of the day, it's a toy but it can be so much more than that for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy.

I must say that I enjoy the fiction immensely, even the not so great moments. I really like how people have fleshed out and re-imagined the Transformers mythos over the years. I especially like seeing this cross over into the toys.

As a Transformers fan, I say that I've come to the fandom for the toys but I've stayed for everything else.

This is actually a very good question, something I haven't thought about in awhile.

I love Transformers because of how diverse the concept is and how I can personally relate to the characters.

The concept of transforming robots is truly out of this world. From a toy standpoint it kind of stands by itself. They're similar products, but nothing like a sentient robot that disguises itself. That concept is so attractive to not only kids, but it's obviously stayed with many of us.

My other point, being able to relate to the characters, gives me chills in a way. On the surface, and especially in today's Transformer world, you have licensed vehicles that are Transformers. When I see a Camero, I know who he is. When I see a Lambo, I know who he is.

On a more personal level, these robots are so human-like it's very easy to connect with them. I'll never forget my favorite G1 episode - "The Burden Hardest To Bear." I watched that episode on re-run whenever life got tough.

I just have so much to love about Transformers now that I'm thinking ...

I guess it's the mythos and the characters that keeps me in, just the overall concept of these giant mechanical beings arriving from another planet that was devastated has always piqued my interest.

I was wracking my brain for the most articulate answer until I read this. It is in fact the mythos. Of course, the cool aspects of transforming robots who can disguise themselves as vehicles is part of the mythos, but it's so much more than that. The rich depth of different factions and personalities and an entire world devastated by civil war, pivotal philosophical conflict at the heart of the matter, it all goes into a very neat, tightly bound concept.
