TF molds cost a lot. repainting lets them put another figure on the market without having to make a mold for it, hire a designer, a sculptor, and all that stuff. makes it easier to afford more expensive and complicated molds.

Another issue is that back in ye old days, a given toy may be available to market for at least TWO YEARS.

Now, aside from largest products, most figures are cycled at LEAST once a quarter, if not more. Now, a given TF deluxe may only be on the market 6 months at most.

In so far as the "white Prime" thing, you got Dreamwave to thank for that. They caused a bit of buzz by "officially" showing Magnus without his armor, now Hasbro and Takara assume there is some sort of demand for it (same with Sunstorm repaints). At least it through in some variety aside from the endless "black evil Prime" repaints we were getting.

I can see repainting a toy, but a statue seems a bit risky to me. Unless you're looking for bookends, I guess

In Magnus' case, I wouldn't mind them milking the white-Optimus schtick if they would just once bother to give us friggin' TRAILER ARMOR to go with it. I never minded it before, but now it really IS getting old, IMO. Nemesis Prime...bleh. I never quite understood the need for giving Unicron his own equivalent of a Prime; that's what we got Galvatron for.

Still, in defense of repaints...I gotsta have my Seekers. I actually got kinda cheesed with "Cybertron" when they gave us a kick@$$ mold for Starscream and a wimpy one for Thundercracker. Even with the head remold for Skywarp, the Armada seekers are some of my favorites of the line.

Dude I know you are venting, but look at the whole line of transformers, the first and best tfs were all repaints of each other, for the most part.

I just imagine that he sounds like Arnold from different strokes, and when he puts his armor on, he sounds like robert stack.

I am so mad about this!

    *places preorder*
    :D

Seriously though, you can't ignore that the Ultra Magnus toy includes a white Prime cab. It's even pictured on the original box art in a play scenario - with the trailer separate.

I grew up wondering why the show never acknowledged the "white Prime" aspect. The Dreamwave storyline that finally brought Magnus out of his armor fixed what was (to me) a 20-year inconsistency in the UM story.

Well, wasn't the original idea to have Prime get that trailer, to power him up or something?
I thought I read this on here years ago, but maybe it was someone talking like they knew what was what.
I was hoping to hear something about this on the recent DVD release, but I heard nothing, so maybe I was right on my thoughts that it was just something someone had made up.
Though I may have confused this with the God Ginrai trailer story.

repainting lets average fans have a choice, it give completists more of a challenge.

although in the long run, when certain characters are only repaints, it make that characters uniqueness less... like having 2 of the same 1
but you can always mix universes and have different bodies for them.

most g1 fans are fine with this... because transformers in general, were toys taken from different lines, and then most of the first ones were 2 or even 3 to a mold
