    I've been a Transformers fan since way back in the 80's I watched all of g1, and the 1986 movie a million times, and this just occurred to me.

    Grimlock has always hated Optimus Prime. He's never really had a high opinion of Optimus.
    Why is it in the 1986 movie after Primes death didn't Grimlock attempt to take over the Autobots. It's something he's always wanted to do, and you'd think that would be his chance.
    I guess it's because Grimlock was really softened for the movie, but even that's a bit weird.
    It's just a thought, and the movie might have a taken a much different direction too.

    You must have missed 2 episodes, where Grimlock's opinion of Optimus was changed;

    Read the comics. He crowned himself king as soon Prime got taken out of the picture.

    i'd imagine if grimlock would have used the matrix & become the autobot leader in the 1986 TF movie.

    he'd been called "Grimlockimus Prime" & would have powered up into this form below:

    As the OP says, Grimlock was already being watered down in all aspects by the time the movie came around. Once season 3 kicked in he was nothing more than a giant bumbling pet used for comic relief.
    It's a shame as Grimlock had some great potential in the early days of the cartoon, but once he and Prime made their peace he pretty much became a shadow of his former self.

    Actually, the Autobots ASKED him to be leader at the end of the Trypticon issue IIRC. He became an ass shortly after that.

    I really liked him in the toons when I was a kid. I still do. He is a fun character to watch in G1. The comics made him an ass that IMO wasn't a likeable leader. I'm suprised they couldn't do Rodimus Prime or Ultra Magnus in the comics.

    Because once Prime died, Grimlock and his Dinobots turned into retarded comic relief characters who would rather hunt fish and play waiter than lead the Autobots.

    But like the Japanese cartoon continuations, the UK stories were lost to US audiences to much years after the fact.

    Yeah, that was an pretty good issue for its time when Grimlock and the Dinobots confronted Trypticon. The idea of Grimlock becoming Autobot leader and he becoming a despot (wearing a crown etc) was pretty funny but being a Grimlock fan, I was kind of disappointed at how he was written.

    I get what you mean. Growing up I had access to both the US and UK comics and some of the UK comics were really good! What what I didn't didn't like was the "time travelling" concept. I would have preferred if the stories were told in the "present". I guess this wasn't possible because of "future" based characters like Rodimus Prime.
