He could have joined Autobots, he even saved Bulkhead from Mech's laser weapon. Why did they randomly decided to kill him off?

Yeah this is an old topic but still.

Because Hasbro deemed the toy too expensive to make, or too fragile to release?

I actually completely forgot who Breakdown was so I had to look him up. Then the memories of boringness came flooding back to me.

    He was the most expendable.

Because he was voiced by Adam Baldwin. Same reason why Airachnid was written out for around an entire season, and why Cliffjumper got rekt. I think there might have been someone else whose VA wanted too much money for their character to live.

    He wasn't, though.

He still had a plotline to be developed. Knock Out was far more expendable.

Except keeping Knockout was a much better decision.

Hmmm, how so? I mean, i guess Knockout is pals with Breakdown and all, and Knockout was the more popular of the two, being the twisted medic and all. But... how so?

Yeah, Baldwin said on twitter or at a con it was because they wanted to renegotiate his pay contract, and he refused.

Not really sure. I guess there were just too many voice-actors? Knowing now the mess that went on behind the scenes of Prime's development, it could have been any number of technical or budgeting issues.

EDIT: Oh so that's why. I guess budget really was the issue.

Damn, I loved Baldwin and all, but if they were really under a tight budget, they shouldn't have gone for these super expensive and well-known names to voice regular characters. A character that appears every now and then, sure hire them. But as regulars? No way would that work out in the end.

Thus the brilliant voice work wasted for Breakdown, Dreadwing, and Airachnid.

The show was more interested in big names than good character arcs.

He was killed to show some gravity in the TV show.

Cliffjumper and Breakdown added to that.

Unfortunately gutless writing stopped that from continuing.

Both Bulkhead and Prime should have died before the end of the series too.

Breakdown's death contributed nothing to the show. Hardshell was blatantly Breakdown and fulfilled the same role in the show ( big dumb tough guy who also got pitted against Bulkhead), and how Hardshell went out is how Breakdown should've gone out.

And yes, frankly the show hiring so many expensive voice actors and then not make good use of them was really dumb. So was making up a good whole model for Cliffjumper only to kill him off right away. They only lucked out they could reuse Skyquake's model for Dreadwing when they did the exact same thing.

I don't know about this stuff with the voice actor, but from a story perspective, Breakdown was killed to establish Airachnid as a threat on her own, and to give Silas a Transformer corpse to wear.

Arachnid was already established to be a threat when he killed Arcee's partner Tailgate back on Cybertron and gave Arcee a hard time. Also Silas appeared in two episodes and got killed, did it worth it?

... That would've been interesting. Breakdown basically filling Hardshell's role. Which would give more oomph to Miko seeking to kill his rival. But at the same time Breakdown is nowhere near as malicious or bloodthirsty as Hardshell. And really it would've been better if Bulkhead had died at the end of Hurt, so that the cycle of revenge not only killed Breakdown, but Bulkhead too, making it all a show of how pointless revenge is, as shown in the show.

Then again, Breakdown doesn't need to be as bloodthirsty as Hardshell for the arc to work. Let's say he leads the squad of Insecticons, and... Well, nothing would change. Just change the dialogue, of course. Breakdown fires the last potshot... But he probably wouldn't boast about it too much like Hardshell. I could see him beating Wheeljack to death.

However, I would need another episode or a subplot or two of an episode to develop the rivalry further before Toxicity and Hurt.
