Doesn't he have two in his forearms? The one from the trailer doesn't look anymore different.
Seems kinda pointless, but it's actually kinda cool to me for some reason
'Cause he wanted to god damn it!!!
Because he's the goddamn Ba- I mean Optimus Prime.
I looks bigger to me. The ones that come from his arms seem to be a good bit shorter than his arm, but the one he picked up was easily as long or longer. Though I'm not positive.
Perhaps because his pole axe was being modified by Que.
Because in DOTM, holding weapons instead of having them come out from your limbs is the newest hip trend.
he needed viagra for his sword, so he got a bigger one.
LOL... but I agree with this
yeah, i'm too sleep deprived to think right.
optimus is so hipster doe.
You can never have too many swords.
Because he decided to keep his faces in his body now
That gave me the weirdest image in my head.....
I know that this is a joke, but there is a reason to have both types of weapons. The ones stowed in his arms are limited length and utility. I'm assuming that they're more of a fallback weapon.
The handheld versions allow for a more diverse range of martial art. For example, watch the Sentinel vs. Optimus final melee battle, and picture it with only the wrist blades. There can be no wrist articulation with the wrist blades which would limit his offensive and defensive options.
..or, they just thought that it would look cool for him to pull out a sword and shield.
That's my assumption.
Remember the "wheels in mah feet" trend from ROTF? Near EVERY new design (or at least the more prominent ones) had wheels(treads in Megs' case) either as feet, in feet, or instead of feet.
I see it kinda like that. The concept designer(s) got an idea in their head, and it translated into everything they did.
Optimus's forearm blades are completely detachable, he can:
fight with them in his forearm
fight with them in his hand
throw them at something
His chosen face collection implement of the moment, probably no big deal.
That being said a sword held in ones hand is actually a lot more useful than a fixed blade coming out of a forearm as it can be held at far greater angles and is far far more capable of defending against other melee weapons in all seriousness.
