Or any decepticons, for that matter (i.e. TFP, though I do respect Prime Megatron for being enough of a boss to say screw Earth modes, I'm a cybertronian spacecraft). If they could fly in robot mode, why bother? What purpose did they have to hide their existence from the humans?

More importantly, why would they fly together in swarms with some in alt mode and some remaining to appear as the giant robots they are? Doesn't that just limit their maneuverability during airborne combat?

Because a gun, camera and tape recorder flying would look stupid.

Notice who is flying in robot mode and vehicle mode.

Because last I checked, a flying custom Walther P-38, cassette player, and giant camera are any less conspicuous than giant robots.

To be fair, Soundwave DID fly in cassette mode once, but it looked absolutely ridiculous.

    EDIT: Dang, ninja'd by MMM!

Flying in jet mode is better aerodynamically thus being more fuel efficient.

Personally I would find floating ghost cameras and guns scarier than blocky robots with grumpy faces.

But why not hop in the cockpit? it's not like Megatron was ever very independent in alt mode anyway.

So some cons were trying to be green and some just didn't care?

Okay, I have to be blunt: YOU ARE OVERTHINKING THIS.

In a toyline called TRANSFORMERS, you would expect the toys to transform, right? Thus, they have alt. modes. The whole damn point of the show was to sell the toys (I.E. Buzzsaw only has ONE canonical appearance in the show, as he was a freebie with Soundwave's toy, so he didn't need to be advertised). You can't look for deeper meaning in an 80's cartoon with a limited budget, scripts that the authors themselves have admitted were usually half-baked, and characters were walking advertisements for their toys.

I'm currently watching G1 since it's on Netlfix now, and I'm reaching to understand the appeal. This is one of many issues that make it hard for me to follow, and I just thought maybe there was an explanation or justification out there that could make the show a little easier to watch. But thanks for confirming that G1 is basically crap.

That is actually how Megatron and Soundwave got around in the Marvel comics. The "flying Decepticons" was purely a creation of the G1 cartoon. In the comics, if you knock Megatron off a cliff, he falls hard, no matter what mode he's in.

But yeah, I think most people here are avoiding the real question. It's not about "why didn't Megs and Soundwave fly around in their disguised modes?"... it's more like "if Megs and Soundwave are flying around as robots anyway, why even bother with jet disguises?"

If I needed to come up with a reason, I'd say it's because the jet modes are faster and more agile in the air?

Yeah, this. I once read somewhere that robot mode flight for TFs is far, far slower (the speed of a piston-engine aircraft) than jet mode flight (the speed of an actual jet).

That makes a lot of sense, except that Megatron and Soundwave and all those cats seemed to keep up just fine with the seekers. Maybe they were just built faster, and if they had flying alt modes, we'd actually see how much faster they were than the seekers.

That part you can blame on the poor writing. The Sunbow cartoon rarely depicted the Transformers' abilities the way they were originally outlined in the comics.

Not to mention their abilities changed on a regular basis in the cartoon.

I always hated how the G1 guys could randomly fly in robot mode.

I used to be the same way. However more recently its actually grown on me. Why it is still by far my least favourite TF continuity, I do find it quite enjoyable. If its not your thing, try the G1 marvel comics. While the first 4 have horrible dialouge, it only gets better from there on in :D

Well the answer to the OP's question, "why did they have alt modes?", is simply that they were repaired/reactivated by the Ark's computer, which apparently decided to incorporate the alt modes as part of that reactivation.

How the Decepticons subsequently chose to use, or not use, these modes is a secondary issue.

Infiltration and Specialized Operations while in Alt-mode.

Also because they're cybertronian and its a core part of their nature.
