So I am curious why is Chicago the staging ground for the third act? Just happens to be where the cons decided to take over or is there something there that the want. If so what do you think it is?

Don't know. Probably some plot device, or it's actually a world-wide take-over, and Chicago is just where the main cast happens to be at the time?
Maybe an invade from within and spread out like a virus tactic? Usually alien war films start from coastal cities. Tactically its smart. This way you don't have to split your invasion forces to invade the east and west coast. If I were advising starscream, Megatron or Shockwave I'd say to Spread down the Mississippi and screw up global communications and you split the US and its military in half. But thats just me.
We'll find out in the film, but from the filmmaking standpoint, maybe they really enjoyed the city location over the desert or forest, and as far as American cities go, Chicago is pretty up there, and I'd think it would be extremely problematic to film such a movie in NYC (though, it would have been AWESOME).
there's probably something under the city..... or Bay put a blindfold on and threw a dart at a map of the US....wherever it landed, that would be the final fight location
