This has always bugged me a little, sentient machines that live for millions of years through wars and god know what else, and most of them can't shoot for shit.

So many times in the G1 eps I remeber, even BW, BM and Armada (haven't seen much of the rest, so won;t include them), you see one side firing at the other, whilst lasers fly round and past them like rain and I think *OK, so maybe the other guys are firing blindly from cover*, but nope, we then pan over to the other guys and they are doing the same.

Most of the guys shot to hit ratio must be billions to one. Sure some guys were pretty good, they seemed to take their time and actually aim, screamer holding megs for example, sixshot being a badass. But for every one tf that can fire a few shots and hit someone, more often than not nearly mortally wounding them, theres 100 who seem to just stand there firing 'Pulp Fiction' style and missing people directly in front of them.

There's just got to be some reason for this insanity! Any ideas?...

Mechanical precision blurred by too much abstract thought (side effect from being granted true free will) ???
Maybe they were just programmed to be really bad shots as some kinda failsafe :lol
I dunno- I really can't think of anything that isn't silly as hell here.

They have their guns set to 'Stormtrooper', its this little dial on the gun. People always miss it.

I always presumed they did get hit by the blasts, but their shields absorbed most of the energy.

Slight deflection from their individual shields?

Maybe the younger recruits are still a little anxious in battle and are just firing blindly?

Maybe their guns are so powerful that no matter how well they try to aim it shakes enough to go off target?

When they shoot directly at each other the flashes of light from the other side's guns distract them?

They have a subconscious Cybertronian brotherly desire to not hurt one another?

No idea, but in these situations I usually just nip it at the bud and tell myself, "Their technology is too advanced for me to understand."

Its not that they are bad shots, millions of years of warfare will tighten up your marksmanship. But millions of years of crack shots will breed soldiers who can dodge real good.

I think weapons can be hard to aim perfectly in an atmosphere. Also I seem to remember transformers regularly taking hits in battle and needing repairs from it. But my memory is foggy. Perhaps it wasn't often enough considering the fact that they were highly tuned machines much of the time, but they were not always so well tuned... long hours in the field without maintenance might set their rangefinders off. also, they tended to be pretty fast and some might be able to sort of dodge some fire... although to be that big, how fast could they posssibly be...?

I might be remembering wrong, but the Maximals from Beast Wars had the best marksmanship of any TF series I've ever seen.

    Has anyone...failed to shoot Waspinator?

Because little kids are watching, and too many shots actually connecting would be too violent for them. Same reason all the shots missed in GI JOE and every pilot managed to eject right in the nick of time.

    ^Real answer.^

Fictional answer is probably one of a few things:

    1. If they're so super-designed to shoot, they must be designed to dodge. G1 destroys this theory but it's still food for thought.

    2. Thye're natural instincts guide them, not their systems, so they have as good aim as regular creatures and are prone to missing. No one's perfect.

    3. They all have guns with a nasty habit of pulling in different directions which screws up their aim.

    4. They do it for the lulz. *Remebers Feral Scream and the hilarity of Primal and Meagtron unloading ten feet from eachother and missing completely making total fun of TFs history of bad aim*

    :lol

It's in the first part at almost the beginning of the episode.

It's extra funny, because afterwards Cheetor whips out a bigass gun all loony-toons style that he's never used before (and never will again) and tries to shoot down Waspinator and blows up Primal!:lol

    ^This.

Jokes aside, this is the biggest reason why I loved the Robotech series or Macross series so much better as a cartoon/anime.

People died left and right. Hell my favorite character died in those respective series. But it definitely made the story more gripping and compelling.
