I know the pitch to Hollywood was (robots invade earth...some are evil, some are good...) but all the designs scream pissed off robot...except prime....what gives?

Cuz their supposed to be giant shape changing ALIEN robots from a distant planet, not happy faced characters from a kids' saturday morning cartoon.

Yeh, but whats wrong with making them humanesque when they adapt thier appearance? Makes sense. I don't much like the barbed wire, bat face looks or the compromises on what they transform into but perhaps they will work within the movie and thats all that matters. Still, fan faves like Bumblebee and Starscream have been changed so much they are unrecognisable.
I was hoping they would stay close to what they transformed into in the shows.
As a Beetle, Bumblebee, the name, made sense and up to the first image of him in this film, people fully expected to see the Bot we all know and love as a VW. How does Bumblebee make sense as a Charger or whatever he is?
I guess it was easier to get GM and Chrysler brands since many brands are under one roof - speaking of obtaining licenses - and the sheer variety of 'brands' in the original series would be too expensive to portray I guess.
Even though they are not 'branded' in the animation, its clear what they are supposed to be in the '80s period.
For example - Bumblebee is obviously a Beetle, Ironhide and Ratchet are Toyota Hiace vans, Hound is a JEEP, Jazz a Porsche and Sunstreaker/Sideswipe are Lamborghinis. A good diverse range.

    :)

To put it kinder than Type-R did...

Imagine if you were watching Predator, or Indedpendence Day, or War of the Worlds, and when the aliens faces were revealed...they had human faces like I, Robot.

Would seem rather disappointing and confusing, no?

But you're asking more specifically about them looking pissed off...are you basing that on the toys or the leaked concept art? I don't personally feel the concept art makes them look angry in any way, though the toys definitely don't look very happy...

Well, I think that this might have actually happened if it weren't for the fact that VW want's nothing to do with Transformers, or any other type of toys that deal with "war". That’s why Classics Bumblebee looks more like a Mazda Speed 3 or a Kia Spectra 5. Plus, he seems like he's got a little bit of Hot Rod's personality infused with G1 BB's, so it fits that he's a '07 Camaro in the movie.

They're also been warring for a pretty long time... actually, how long were they at war on Cybertron?

Anyways, rounded approacheable features and design are not meant for the battlefield.

I wouldn't want a VW (old or new) Beetle BB in the movie even if VW agreed. It just wouldn't fit into the darker tone of this movie. Imagine a car chase between Barricade and a VW BB, it would be over before it even started. VW Beetles don't stand a chance against Saleen S281s.

I never liked G1 Bumblebee much. He was always just a pudgy, "horny" babysitter bot to Spike imo, but I absolutely love the war machine BB we're getting for this movie.

I dunno. People kept saying Ironhide had a kitty-kat face in his movie toy thread. :)

(actually it was his mouth/chin area people mistook for the entire face, but there ya go)

The largely insect-like faces, IMO, are, for the most part, the only thing I don't like about the designs I've seen.

I would have to agree. If you went into war smiling you would probly be taken out pretty fast. On the other hand, the history of Autobots is that they were bots made for civilian use. Where as Decepticons were built specificaly for war.(which I question at times)

Your right. The Decepticons usualy do a good job of that on their own.

    Me neither.

They are about as scary as Iron Giant, Eragon, ET and the Muppets.

    Now the Decepticons look scary.
