I've seen a lot of posts and threads containing things along the lines of "If Movie 3 wants to be successful, it needs [insert G1 element here]! Death to the twins!"

My question is: why does it all have to be G1 elements? G1 is not the only Transformers series with elements that were good, so why is G1 seemingly the only one that people care about? I know that a lot of people grew up with it, but that doesn't mean that it is, by default, the best.

Also, let it be known that this is not a thread against those who don't like the movie (as I'm sure it will be accused of being). It is merely a question as to why G1 is supposedly the only important Transformers series ever.

I don't know. I think there's a lot of good elements from other series that would translate well onto the big screen, and aparently the movie thinks so, too.

I'd like to see Energon, only instead of cubes, make it crystals.

G1 is the one that started it all and so far is still the most memorable. Every other Transformers series has in some way, shape, or form taken it's cues/borrowed heavily from G1. Also, I wouldn't pay attention to anyone that say's in order for TF3 to be successful it needs (insert idea here). The current team has done a pretty good job on their own making the Transformers live action movie franchise a success, regardless of any and all criticisms.

to me I think its alot of people's impression/opinion that the live action movies are a redux of G1 and there for need more G1 to me they are a stand alone TF franchise just as BW/BM was/is The Unicron Trilogy and so on, ill admit they do have some G1 touches to them but they are not G1

I agree. I don't really see the whole "stick an empty cube thingy next to an energy source and let the energon leap out of it" approach working on film. If the cubes were refined and distilled energon crystals, then I can see it working.

I want TF3 to be Beast Wars orientated. Optimus needs to be mutated into a monkey.

Was that sarcasm? I actually can't tell.

Anyways, I'm not a huge fan of the "G1 is the most awesome and nothing that is ever made could possibly be better" mentality.

Feel free to disagree, but I think its because G1 stands well on its own, it has story and sustenance and didn't need the typical gimmicks to be successful like other 80's cartoons did. For me it was like G1 always got it right, even on the weaker episodes, and wasn't always predictable. For example, I don't think you could say that with a series like Inspector Gadget, Bionic Six, etc. (weaker comparisons, I know, but it gets the point across)

As far as the new movies go, its the same way - take the first movie - didn't they use the "original" transforming sound just once (in the prime scene in the alley) or just a couple of times? It crushed me because I was looking for it - why wouldn't a TF not make the transforming sound? I dont' care if they spent too much on the Prime rendering and couldn't work with much else. Also, the movies have a little too much "Hollywood" in them. It is clear that they don't need all of the humor/sex jokes/plot devices/bs that they use. They are working with an already successful formula and could do without adding in the extra elements both movies use to cater to fringe people just so they can garner more interest. They don't need it becuase they would get the TF fans and the non TF fans either way.

I feel the movies are really starting to get away from the semi-sense of realism that the first movie had. I'm not going to dig up old issues, but they really need to buckle down, go back to the roots and develop from there. Otherwise we will be looking at TF turning into something like the SAW movie franchise - the first one was amazingly realistic - the latter ones...well...

I can see it now - we'll be at TF 7 in a few years, the twins will sign a deal with bad boy records, the constructicons will form a disgruntled laborers union, etc.

Also it might be hard for the newer/younger fans, but if you watch G1 and then you watch a later series, I feel a major disconnect (towards my toys, TF in general, etc.).

That's why G1. It will keep everything on track and preserve the quality and state of TF for the future generation. Just my opinion though.

But everything DOES suck compared to G1. I don't sit down to watch a nice couple of Energon episodes, or kick back with a bit of Beast Wars when I feel ill. G1 4 lyf, yo.

    G1 was about energon, technically.

Anyway, my reason for prefering seeing G1 elements in the movie verse because in my opinion, G1 is still one of the best TF series that have been made.

Let me break it down a bit.
I've seen every Transformers series (in America at least)

G1: Yes maybe a bit dated and corny by modern standards but it's still a pretty solid series, and still better than some of the crap you see on Saturday morning cartoons nowadays.

BW: Excellent series, though the 3d animation is dated by now, but still a good series. But Beast Wars is an expansion of G1 so too many BW references wouldn't work too well.

BM: It was okay. The 3d animation was a bit better than BW. but again, BM is an expansion of BW, so that wouldn't work too well.

RID: It was just a weird series. It was an okay series, but pretty forgettable. Their were a lot of elements from both BW and G1, but it didn't have a lot of its own style.

AEC: I'm just going to throw them all into one clump. AEC can be pretty much described as pretty dull. Don't get me wrong, the last half of Armada, got pretty exciting but it to keep my interest. I did like how Unicron was Cybertrons moon, and Megatron sacrificed himself for the good of the Transformers. I liked that. But I think that was greatest contribution that AEC ever had. That would be cool for the Bayformers, but that's it.

Animated: That series was just gold. It did everything right where Bayformers failed. But it was just a re imagined G1 with some Bayformers BW elements.

I dunno. That's my thoughts on the matter.

It's the fanboy mentality. Plain & simple.

You see the same exact thing with all other fandoms. GI Joe fans only care about A Real American Hero from 1982-1985, everything else sucks. Robotech fans go nuts over Macross but Southern Cross & Mospeada aren't as popular. Star Wars fans stick to Empire Strikes Back & despise episodes I,II & III. They'll insist it's because the new trilogy isn't good but it's really just their mentality. Like most humans, they simply can't accept change. You can see the pattern there if you know what to look for.

That's why we can never have a Transformers series without friggin Optimus Prime & Megatron as the leaders. If Optimus Prime isn't Autobot Commander in every single TF show & movie then the fanboys brains will lock up & the Earth will spin violently out of orbit & life will end.

I suppose that another thing that I'm trying to say is why can't the people making the films be allowed to come up with new ideas without constantly being bombarded with "This G1 character/place/situation should have been used instead! Death to new things!"

    EDIT:
That makes a hell of a lot of sense, dude. I agree completely, although it still bugs me.

I think that's just your preference. I can easily sit down and watch a few episodes of BW or TFA.

G1 was the original. It's what started it all and nothing will ever live up to it. That's what I think.

I 100% agree about the Energon comment, but Beast Wars, on the other hand, is a show I would sit down and just watch random episodes from (and to be fair, it is considered part of the G1-continuity). Beast Wars had far better writing and took itself more seriously than its oft-corny predecessor.

Frankly, other than the '86 movie and mythos-building episodes, and the more epic story arcs (Fives Faces, Rebirth, Desertion of the Dinobots, etc.) the G1 cartoon is kind of weak. Don't get me wrong, I consider myelf a G1 fanboy; just being realistic.

But the topic is really more about the G1 aspects (style, mythos, characterizations, etc.), which are unsurpassed, much as Sledge crudely put, so I digress.
