I have been running it since last night and so far it's a hell of a lot faster than Vista. Some of the tweaks take some getting used to but so far this is a BIG improvement.

Are you in the beta or did you acquire it through other means?

Microsoft is letting a limited number of people download it. Download the Windows 7 Beta

Both. I am in but I got it with an Eye Patch because it was quicker than Microsoft's Servers, but I have a legit Key.

It certainly looks cooler, but how does it perform overall? Have you had any trouble installing any of your hardware? Is there any incompatibility?

Yeah I heard about Windows 7 last night on TV (on G4 of all channels). Hopefully it'll make up for the crap fiesta that is Vista.

So far I have had ZERO problems. All of my hardware except my Soundblaster X-Fi were installed by the Windows installation. I have since updated my Nforce and Geforce drivers and installed the Soundblaster driver (The Soundblaster Driver had to be installed in Vista Compatibility mode, the Vista Drivers work fine, though the driver for my Geforce Cards , which is new as of the 8th said Windows 7 on the screen splash even though the DL said it was for Vista)

Every program I have installed has worked great.

The beta is set to run through August so going with my exp with Windows Betas in the past say this should be out in June/July

    It's Vista +

Which means that it is XP - (versus XP - - -), which means I am so passing..

I am downloading it right now. I don't want to install it on my main Vista computer so I will have to install Vista first on my old XP machine (you can only upgrade from a Vista install). So I will see how it goes. Windows 7 does not have a projected ship date but they are shooting for the second half of 2009, but I would be suprised if it was out by the holidays (I am hoping for sooner though).

I've got a friend (also not a fan of Vista) that's gonna be trying the beta, so I'll see how things go with him and remain slightly pessimistic with a minor bit of optimism.

After Vista I expected a train wreck, however in doing research I found out that this has been in overall development longer than Vista and was scheduled originally to come out instead of Vista.

I've been reading about this for awhile and the people who I trust in these matters say its actually not bad. Though I'm also curious if it is a resource hog like Vista is. I realize I need to get more memory in general, but I dont wanna have to upgrade all my hardware just to run this. I can easily just stick with XP and Ubuntu.

So far it has run as smooth as XP X64 on my machine. Looks like Vista was another ME, this has some serious potential.

Yes, for all of those people who were stung by Vista, please don't say that Windows 7 will be the same.

It's much leaner than Vista. The reason it's like that is because Microsoft wants this version to be able to run on Netbooks. So imagine, if the performance of this operating system is made to match for a low powered Netbook, imagine what it could do for a Gaming rig.

So I ask once again, to please give 7 a shot. You might find that you like it.

As you know I'm buying a laptop for school which starts in May, which means I won't be able to get it loaded with Windows 7. However, the one I'm looking at does have an XP downgrade available.

My question is: Is it possible/does it make sense to buy the laptop with the XP downgrade and upgrade to Windows 7 later on? Thereby completely bypassing Vista?

As far as the beta goes you cannot upgrade from XP to 7, only Vista to 7. I did a clean install. This might change in the final version.
