Here's also a big bad point as to "why it didnt go successful":

    Transformers 2007: 4011 theatres = opening weekend = $70,502,384
    Transformers RotF: 4234 theatres = opening weekend = $108,966,307
    Transformers DotM: 4088 theatres = opening weekend = $97,852,865

    Transformers 1986: 990 theatres = opening weekend = $1,779,559

Did you also factor in no internet, less hype, less fans, and less "geeks"?

    Budget:
    Transformers 2007: $150 million
    Transformers RotF: $200 million
    Transformers DotM: $195 million
    Transformers 1986: much much less

I'm pretty sure YoungPrime and 1984forever hate it. :D

Myself, I like it - more than the live action movies. It featured the best Optimus Prime vs Megatron fight ever IMO.

I have it on my iPhone and watch it every now and then.

It wasn't too bad, I'm not the hugest fan of it but I respect it. It's G1 man, without it we wouldn't have what we do today Transformers-wise.

The Movie was a product of the time. Like a lot of early-mid 80s sci fi, it ripped off Star Wars unashamedly.

Unicron (big planet that destroys other planets but which luckily has a fatal achilles heel) = Death Star
Hot Rod (wilful young buck who learns responsibility and makes good) = Luke
Arcee (token strong-willed warrior woman with earmuffs) = Leia
Prime (older mentor character who dies, only to return as a voiceover) = Obi Wan
Grimlock (brutish but lovable oaf) = Chewbacca

Plus the many screen-wipe scene changes, episodic use of locations etc.

So yeah, TF:TM was nothing new, stylistically or narratively.

But hey: it's fun, it's quotable as hell, it has a rockin' soundtrack and it has Eric Idle and Orson Welles.

    What more do you need?

I just meant his (the OPs) sudden change in stance from "RAWR G1MOVIE SUXXORZ" to "But I just wanted to know why it was not a mega theater hit" was him backpedaling on his originally stated position.

i love it just as much as bayformers, albeit for different reasons-one of the reasons i loved it was the death of Optimus and the begining of Rodimus Prime as autobot leader

Well I enjoy it more than the Michael Bay films. What I dislike is the overuse of movie quotes.

    Drinks up! :drunk

Not even Malkovich's appearance could save the damn day. Hell, we had it good with other comedic actors. The writers of that shitfest gave them horrid roles. Cept for Leboeuf.

As a friend of mine said: "Like a screaming bitch."

pacing is all over the place, making it hard to watch from beginning to end anymore. but it's still good. great animation, music, and entertaining scenes everywhere.

No, I don't think your the only one who isn't in love with the 86 movie.

To me it was just "ok", I was sad to see almost all of the original transformers die.

I don't go out of my way to watch it.

I'm not sure that the pacing is a problem per se - the only time the plot really slows down are the character scenes on the two shuttles (Daniel trying out the exo-suit; Kup telling war stories to the Dinobots), and the endless Galvatron/Unicron arguments, which go nowhere. But all of these are pretty short scenes, and give the audience a time to draw breath. It also helps sketch out these characters, tell us who they are, what makes them tick etc.

The real problem I find is when the plot splits into two, and we have the parallel stories on Junk and on Quintessa. The Quintesson storyline is so much stronger (IMHO) than the scenes on Junk, that it's almost a drag when we cut from Hot Rod and Kup's adventure to the relatively-dull Ultra Magnus and Springer. It just makes the whole third act unbalanced, I think.

Just as an aside, while we're comparing this to the Bay movies - Kranix has about five minutes of screen time, but his death is totally affecting... it hits me every time.

Bayverse Ironhide has about eight hours of screen time, and his death elicits no emotional response in me whatsoever.
