So, a few months ago I get a phone call on my cell (which is my emergency pager number) from and area code 320 number. They phone enough times without leaving a message that I call them to find out why they keep calling. "We have no record of that number in our system." is the standard response that I keep getting. I say fine, but do whatever you have to to stop harassing this number.

Fast forward to this week and the number starts phoning again. I go through the same crap with them. Why are you phoning me EVERY FREAKING DAY and not leaving a message. This time I get the name of the company at least (JCC & Associates). I ask them what kind of a company they are or what they are selling. They will not answer that question. Instead, they hang up on me about four separate times. Yeah, I was being persistant with the call backs.

Can any of the internet super sleuths here help me out figuring who they are?

MODS: Can I post up the phone numbers that were showing up? They are technically not personal information, but I don't want to break any rules here. I just want to get an answer as to who these people are.

Why don't you answer the phone next time they call.

I think he was answering - or, at least, he was establishing enough communication with them to glean that info.

Was the only way you talked with them through calling them back, juordo, or did you answer the calls as well? I'd assume you probably answered the first few times if the number wasn't easily recognizable.

Yeah, that is the name of the company that I seem to find as well. Seems they have a habit of this type of behavior.

Usually it is in my desk and I do not see the missed calls until the end of the day. Usually I ignore them, but when the same number calls multiple times... I like to know why. Especially since that phone number is reserved for emergencies (and really only my patients should have it).

I've never actually had my phone when they call. I just missed them this morning and decided to try and figure out who the were. Since it was the same number each time, I decided to give them a call back (or 5).

That's fucked up. The CallFerret site that SunnyDay posted has some woman on there describing the same sketchy BS that you've been dealing with.

Now that I know who they are, and I've managed to find Jim Christensen's email address... what is an appropriate for of revenge? Are there any good sites where you can purposely sign up for spam? Any disturbing sites I should sign ol' Jim up for?

I would send him an email first citing whatever law it is that prevents harassment from debtors; I know they are not suppose to call you at work. Follow that up with a question about why they keep calling and if it is indeed a mistake, they need to take your number off the list immediately.

If that doesn't work, go to every adult site you can find and sign his email up for updates. Try that with random sites for things like viagra, herpes medicine, and herbal remedies. I don't usually condone stuff like that, but sometimes you gotta fight stupid with stupid.

Obviously you're in debt and they've been hired to collect the debt from you as they receive a %. If they're a debt collector and they're calling you constantly, you got some pretty decent debt they want to collect on (a few thousand usually).

If you know for a fact you haven't had any debt that went to collections, I'd check your credit report for identity theft, as for whatever reason, a debt collection agency is tracking you down son!

I hate companies like that. Some online university one kept calling me and never would say anything when I'd answer, and to top it off they'd call like 10 times a day. Finally some lady actually spoke with me, and I made sure they wouldn't call me again. :(

Guard thy kidneys well, organ harvesters are afoot!

Nope, that's not me. My calls are usually accompanied by heavy breathing.

Nope, nadda, zilch (mortgage is only personal debt and practice loan is the only professional debt). The last time I checked my credit report (which was not that long ago), nothing out of the ordinary.

From what I have heard, most debt collectors leave some sort of a message for a call back... at least that is what the guy who I use tells me he is doing to the deadbeats. I'm fairly sure a debt collector would identify themselves as such when asked what type of business they were.

I've also never had any dealings with any companies in Minnesota, and any orders (professional and personal) that are placed south of the border are paid for before they are shipped. They have no record of my name or phone number in their system when I asked them about the calls.

With regards to the legal part of this... what laws would apply? Canadian? American?

That depends on how legitimate the company is. I've dealt with my share of collectors, and have been working hard at cleaning my credit the past few years. I've run into a situation where I have paid off a debt (having the notice of Paid In Full and account closed in hand) and then 18 months later, been contacted by another company trying to collect on the same debt, because it had been re-sold, either to 2 different collectors at the same time, or sold after already paid. I had to go through all kinds of loops, providing proof of payment, copy of the payment letter, etc to get them to stop bothering me. I've also had companies try to collect on a debt without EVER telling me any info on the account. Just "we're collecting on your debt with ComCast". When pressed, they said they weren't able to provide me an account number, or provide me with anything to substantiate it in writing. I asked for an address, wrote a formal letter telling them that according to US law (I'm not sure which set of laws would apply for you, sorry :(  ) they can't attempt a collection if they can't prove validity of the debt, providing a list of all contacts from when they started calling me. About 6 weeks later, presto, a letter saying the debt was dismissed.

I've been on both sides of this, as a collector and a collectee, ironically. The person who calls back may just not have access to that record, unfortunately. It could also be that they have your number purely by mistake, like a data entry error, typing 555-555-5505 instead of 555-555-5550. :(  That being said, good luck getting it removed, because once a number is in a system like that, if they can't contact the person it's been associated with, they'll go back through "old numbers" to find them again, and very seldom are collectors willing to actually *delete* info as opposed to marking it as *not valid*, if that makes any sense.
