Assuming that the franchise continues (almost guaranteed really) who do you NOT want to be the director?

    P.S. Don't say Michael Bay, that's a cheap answer

I'd personally not want it to be James Cameron, I mean if it is, then I'd still watch the film but I'd be very aware that there would be a strong "NEW TECHNOLOGY BAD" theme in the movie

    think about it:

Terminator series- Super advanced robots take over the world and kills everyone
Alien - Humans go into space, get eaten by monsters
Titanic - Super adanced ship (for the time) sinks, most people die (I know it's based on a real event, but STILL!)
Blue Pocohontas - Men with advance tech = bad, nature loving smurfs = good

    what about you guys?

I don't want JJ Abrams to do it, unless he goes all Star Trek on it's ass.

I think Simon Furman and Peter Jackson should sit down and talk some transformers

uh.. John Waters. Roger Corman wouldn't be such a good idea either. Ulli Lommel could singlehandedly destroy the franchise.

With any new movie, they should be brought in with an experienced screenplay writer to find a way to reincorporate elements that Bay overlooked or still is viable in his continuity. If not in Bayverse anymore (most likely), they could do a fresh reboot incorporating a core group of those from G1 with an overall story arc that would make sure all movies in a proposed trilogy mesh together but still allow for more after that trilogy.

You know what - I was having exactly this conversation the other day.

The transformers franchise needs somebody who has the vision to create the huge FX laden set pieces (like Bay), but who can also weave a decent coherent story around them. I think Peter Jackson has both of these qualities.

JJ Abrahms perhaps - although after watching the recent Startrek movie - I'm not sure he'd be right. He seems to like the same kind of goofy humour that Bay likes.

If it were beast wars perhaps. He seems to gave a soft spot for pointless furry animals. Megatron could be a killer prarie dog.

Only noting directors who have played around in the action / sci-fi arenas...

    Steven Spielberg
    - if you thought Bay's version had too much human elements, Spielberg would take it even further... and ham it up as he always does with color by numbers predictability.

    James Cameron
    - he'd pretty much follow suit of Spielberg, except make the good vs. evil story even more cookie cutter.

    Peter Jackson
    - we'd have a 3 hour theatrical version with a 4 hour blu-ray version, and all of it would be mystical backstory nonsense with sweeping epic action sequences that would overwhelm more than impress.

    Joel Schumacher
    - Batman 3 & 4. Enough said.

    George Lucas
    - all 3 of the Star Wars prequels. Again, enough said.

    Sam Raimi
    - it would be a 2.5 hour movie where absolutely NOTHING ever happens and Sam's character would be intentionally made even geekier & uglier since Raimi has this weird thing for social outcasts who become heroes.

    Zach Snyder
    - the whole damn thing would be in slow motion... with cheesy cover songs of 80's hits used as his "arty" juxtaposition.

    Bryan Singer
    - he'd probably make one or two kick ass instalments (X-Men) but then quit out of the blue so he could go direct another shitty comic reboot (Superman Returns)

    Christopher Nolan
    - one of my favorite directors of the past decade, but he would drop the ball somewhere by making it a weird crime thriller where the Bots work with cops and the Cons are partners with the mob :)

Neither of these guys are my favorite directors, but in terms of the source material and being able to successfully get it to work on screen, my votes for who could direct new TF movies still go to Jon Favereu or JJ Abrams (Star Trek style, not Cloverfield or Super 8 style). Actually, I'll even throw in Tony Scott as well based purely on what he did with Black Hawk Down. And maybe the dude who directed District 9 as well.

There are a hundred directors who shouldn't direct it but only 5 that should, so I think the better question is who should direct it.

Asking who shouldn't direct it is like asking "Should Judd Apatow direct TF4?
